Priorities: bottom six forwards, primary goaltending, upgrade defensemen
The Penguins' bottom six forwards have been dismal for at least one or two seasons. The third line tasked with scoring did not contribute goals and point production. The setback forces the first and second lines to increase production and pressure to perform. The fourth line should be a disruption line. It did not create disruption, and aided opponents to win.
Jarry's poor performance in goal this season in a contract year and injury history creates a need for primary goaltending. His predecessor, Matt Murray, has continued to struggle for the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs. Would it hurt or help to invest slightly more in an older and seasoned goaltender like Frederik Andersen, or find a quality goaltender from a team needing to escape the cap ceiling?
The Penguins need consistent defensive pairings to clear the puck out of the zone and make smart defensive plays. Joseph, Smith, and Pickering should be the upcoming defensemen the Penguins need and develop.
