If the pens move down, it should be by a few spots at most... and just so that they can fill their terrible prospect system. This trade doesn't achieve that. The value is bad for PIT.

Going from 14th to 31st would cost MTL 2nd + a lower pick.

Big ED and Kidney are worth close to that, but the whole point of sacrificing a 1st for PIT is duplicating draft picks, not adding a veteran and a low drafted prospect. They can find that otherwise while keeping their 1st.

The Pens don't care about their farm system. They are in "Win now" mode for the next 2-3 years at least. Whomever they pick with 14 OAL isn't going to help them in that window.

I agree... I was just making the point that they're not worried about dropping out of the first more than they're worried about getting someone to help now.

This trade doesn't fit either of those ideas though.
