Ideal 2023 offseason

Created by: Devs17

Description
This is the make or break offseason for NJ, its a weaker free agent market, a lot of contracts need to be assessed and signed, and there isn't wiggle room for bad contracts.

Success is not linear, last year was a great year but you had some ideal situations, A 3rd pair RHD that just signed a 48 million dollar contract and very surprising goaltending. This is going to be a great team for the rest of the decade but the navigation and development this upcoming year is key. After this season Hellebuyck, Saros, or Sorokin is going to be targeted if the goaltender situation is still up in the air. Luke Bahl and Simon are ready so it might get frustrating at times when 3 of your 6 Dmen haven't played 100 NHL games coming into next year

Trades

  1. Colton, Ross [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
I think the log jam in NJ on the back end will push Walsh out, I think he is an overlooked prospect around the league. Tampa for cap reasons will get a a guy that can be a third pairing puck moving D-man for a guy they probably can't pay
TBL
  1. Walsh, Reilly [RFA Rights]
  2. 2024 5th round pick (COL)
2.
VAN
  1. Blackwood, Mackenzie [RFA Rights]
  2. Sharangovich, Yegor [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Ryan Graves Rights

Mac Rights are a stretch, he is 5-0 against the Canucks and they can get him on a friendly contract, I dont know in depth the situation with Thatcher and Spencer Martin.

With the newfound capspace from OEL buyout I feel like the nucks say yes. Blackwood > Marty for sure but not sure how long blackwood would be here due to silovs coming up soon. Idk enough about sharangovich but ryan graves would be clutch too.

Not that I am not a Holtz believer but I wouldnt rule out a prospect swap with him. Devils prospect wise have some depth with, Gritsyuk and Casey highlighting the group. I always liked Podkolzin, think he has just had a rough go in vancouver along with much of their non star players the last few years.

Sharangovich has hit 20's for goals before, he kills penalties and has a great wrister, just his shot selection some time confuses me. More so his decision not to use his wrist shot from distance when it has proved to be leathal with his release.

Interesting idea on the Podkolzin trade. I like the thinking. That’s not gonna get us Colton tho

Can’t see the Canucks moving Podkolzin unless it’s in a package to get a young top 6C or top 4 D

Canucks laugh and hang up the phone actually.

Why on earth would the Canucks want Blackwood? Especially at this cost? Blackwood's QO is 3.34M, He is obviously getting well below that on the open market, so why would the right to negotiate with him have any value? He isn't some hot commodity. He wasn't even AHL starter caliber in his conditioning stint down in Utica. No one is going to be knocking his door down besides teams offering anything besides a max 1 year 1.15M deal.

The guy is injury prone and washed. He isnt even a top 10 UFA goalie this year where there are only 5 potential starter caliber goalies available (andersen/jarry/varlamov/korpisalo/hill). That means there are 5 other backups that are better available for free.

Graves rights aren't worth much either. Historically, UFA rights go for 3rd round pick - future considerations. Graves's rights are probably worth a 5th round pick at most.

We arent trading away Podkolzin for Sharangovich and 2 upcoming UFA, 1 of which we have no need for and isn't NHL caliber, and the other is going to be vastly overpaid

If it’s just Yegor vs Podkolzin, would be a tough call. I could go either way. Probably stick with what we got though.

Tampa Bay declines. They don't want another RD or picks for Colton. They'll definitely get better offers.
