How could Montreal use their cap space to get picks

Created by: KentMcNally

Description
I am thinking that taking on OEL for Vancouver's first, plus Montreal adding would work
Same with Montreal taking on Granlund from Pittsburgh
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Granlund, Mikael
  2. 2023 1st round pick (PIT)
PIT
Realistically, what comes from Montreal's side?
    2.
    MTL
    1. Ekman-Larsson, Oliver
    2. 2023 1st round pick (VAN)
    VAN
Realistically, what comes from Montreal's side (assuming OEL waives for Montreal- perhaps if they agree to retain on him and flip him somewhere he wants to go)??
      3.
      MTL
      1. 2023 5th round pick (TOR)
      2. 2024 4th round pick (TOR)
      TOR
      1. Edmundson, Joel ($1,750,000 retained)
      Buyouts

@KentMcNally I’d like to think PIT would take some older prospects that just need a change of scenery… my guess is Mysak & Norlinder.

For the Vancouver one I don’t even know where to begin

If there is retention on him I could see there being interest as a 6/7 Dman. He did not play well last year and at full cap hit it’s hard to see. That said, Toronto has only 3 draft picks this year and very few the last few years and moving forward at some point your scouts are going to want to work elsewhere if you have zero picks.

Pittsburgh would need a true asset back giving up a lottery 1st.

Nearly dealt 😂, what does that mean? I know he fits the ‘Treviling likes physical dman narrative’ but dude is washed, too much risk (back injury) for the leafs to give up assets and cap space for him

It’s not a lottery 1st… it would be the 14th overall pick

Granlund costs pennies to buy out why would we move our lottery first (14th OA) with him when we can just buy him out?

Precisely, whereas shane Wright barely dominated the O and was just alright in the AHL. And anderson is clearly worth more than a late first, so no thanks from Kent Hughes and all habs fans alike

Not here to troll but you can’t possibly think that statement has any merit, except maybe arguing against your point. He wasn’t traded at deadline despite the obvious opportunity and incentive to do so - all playoff teams value big, physical dmen. Dude’s washed

Because his contract is too much for what he brings. Ditto for many of the Habs players that are older and weren’t dealt. Hughes would have taken what he could have. The cap space alone allows you to acquire an equal or better player on the open market or add a dump. Bergervin screwed Hughes by overpaying Anderson, Gallagher, Dvorak, Hoffman, Armia, Savard, Edmundson and Byron. Now that this is the last year of his deal he’ll probably garner a pick at the deadline with retention. But PLEASE refrain from BUT Chariot got a 1st. I’m sure Florida regrets that one.

A lottery first is a 1st round pick that PRIOR to the draft lottery has the ability to move up to 1st overall…

Sooo nobody wants to talk proposals of players coming from Montreal in order to add to these trades??

I was thinking Montreal can offer some combination of the following to Vancouver and Pittsburgh:
      Florida pick
      Mesar
      Kidney
      Davidson
      Norlinder
      Struble
      Heineman
      Engstorm

Montreal could pick at at #11 or #14L
      Sandin Pellikk
      Leonard
      Wood
      Barlow
      Yager
      Simashev

      Anyone with some contsructive thoughts?

It would depend on how much Pittsburgh values their 14OA pick and the potential players available at that time. I can see MTL sweetening the deal with any of those players.

Hughs would also have to believe that those players available are worth more than what he's giving up. Kidney had a good season last year. Is it worth givcing him up for a similar player at 14OA?

It's no longer considered a lottery pick after the draft lottery. For example, when a team trades their pick with but makes it lottery protected, that means they keep the pick if they win the lottery. Not if they miss the playoffs.
