95% of the Matthews and Marner and Nylander trades I see on here are made by Toronto fans, trying to exchange one of their big-ticket players for three or four players of high quality with an equivalent total cap hit, as here: combined cap hit of Crouse and Keller = $11.45 million; combined cap hit of Marner and player to fill the opened roster slot = $11.8 million or more.

Keller is signed for 5 more seasons and Crouse is signed for 4 more seasons; Marner, for two.

Marner's contract expires in 2025, just when we can expect the former Phoenix franchise to be moving into its new arena -- probably in another state. They'll want to have marquee players to attract their new fans to the arena. Right now, Crouse and Keller will be part of that team. With this trade, the franchise will have nothing after Marner walks.

This would be a bad -- not poor, bad -- trade for Arizona. And, as Warpbox says, they give up the 12th overall pick in this year's draft, too?

The team that gets the best player generally wins the trade. Look at the Tkachuk trade last year. And maybe Marner will decide to re-sign there. Nobody can predict where players want to be. What we know, for certain, is that Arizona is a dumpster fire and Keller probably wants out. Having a team full of disgruntled players is a bad situation. Trading a couple of them for a superstar player in the league is a worthy gamble.
