Look, I know fans are upset that the team didn't receive as high a draft pick as they were positioned on getting, but the reality is, the team was never going to be bad enough all season long to stay as far down in the standings as they were when the coaching change was made. Not only that, but consider the alternative of keeping Boudreau on as head coach: the team probably gets fewer results thereby resulting in a higher draft pick, but at the same time, where is the confidence levels of the players who are in management's long-term plans going to be if those players have to endure losing hockey up until the end of the season? Is Pettersson going to want to re-sign? Will Hughes, Kuzmenko, and Demko going to want to stay? Also, there is only so much a top 5 draft pick can do in an environment of poor practice habits and lackluster game preparation. We fans need to consider the other side of the coin to every hypothetical scenario before we cast any critical judgement. If this team ends the season with a whimper, drafts high, and starts the next season wobbling out of the gate yet again, I know the same fans that were screaming for the tank are going to be complaining about another slow start, and they'll forget about the high draft pick that they wanted. Until management is able to clean up the mess the previous regime left behind, which is probably going to take at least one more off-season beyond this upcoming one, we're going to have to wait to be able to have our cake and eat it too.
