Swing and a miss on that Karlsson trade!
2cap dumps and a LD we don’t need plums 1st for the Norris winner with 4 mil retention and a depth C.
The easiest of passes

Massive decline from San Jose. Take on $18 million in contracts and retain another $16 million on a 100 point defenseman……for nothing

So what is a 32 yo offensive defenseman with an injury history and 11.5MM for the next 4 seasons worth? To a rebuilding team like SJ, he has to be traded.

Petterson is a 26yo first pairing shutdown defenseman.
Petry is a second pairing defenseman who is overpaid by around 2MM
Rutta is salary, but someone might give SJ a low pick for him
The 14 overall pick in this year's draft is highly valued
I also threw in two B prospects (after talking to a few people I know)

Maybe SJ can get more for Karlsson. I wouldn't give more.

Also, a 100 point defenseman this year. How many did he have last year, or the year before? He isn't a perennial PPG player, but he is paid like it.

“How many points did he have in years where he wasn’t health?” Come on now he’s obviously healthy now and proved it with his best season ever on a terrible team. Pettersson isn’t 1st pair, the prospects aren’t B prospects that were added that’s quite generous of a valuation. Then all the cap San Jose takes on…woof that’s bad

He is getting his 3rd Norris this year (expected to anyways) and the last 2 1/2 years has been dealing with a gruesome groin injury that he played through to help us to the WCF in 2019 that made him have to change his style and is finally healthy and has his speed and agility back. And D men like him usually have a longer shelf life than forwards so expecting .8-ppg pace for the next few years isn’t crazy. And you’re not getting him here at 11.5 you’re getting him at 7.5 and didn’t you guys just sign an offensive RD till he was like 43?

He had a healthy season. His first since 2015. He also got lucky with 12 more goals than expected and 34 secondary assists.

You can not like the trade but I don’t believe the Sharks will get much more (if any) in real life.

He hasn't played a full season since 2015.

His PPG since 2015:
1
0.9
0.87
0.85
0.71
0.42
0.7
1.23

This season is likely an outlier. He got lucky in his points. His defense was mediocre.

He is similar to Letang which is why the Pens would want him.

Note: I didn't sign anyone. I don't own the Penguins nor am I employed by them.

A. You know what I meant dude obviously you’re not the GM. I meant your team you root for.
And you’re kind of supporting my claim Karlsson can manage .85 ppg the next few years and that 1.23 was on one of the worst offensive teams in the league and had a horrid PP! Imagine in a team with supporting cast and a decent PP! Easily gets 1 ppg+ next year and at min .85 averaged out over the last 4 of this deal and at 7.5 a season that’s worth a hell of a lot more than you’re offering up here.

Sorry, I was trying to make a joke. I actually root for about 7 teams in the NHL.

I was actually trying to support your claim (PPG) but was saying he doesn't play enough. I could have done a better job laying that out, so that's my bad.

0 for 2

I disgree on his worth. Not based on his offensive production but his health and defensive play.

As for the trade, I think 14 overall, a solid young defenseman, a few Bish prospects, and a dice roll on Petry is worth Karlsson and a good checking 3rd liner. You can disagree, I don't hold that against you.

Ehhh I would agree if we could get a little less retention. With that much I really want 2 1sts, as for the young D sharks are pretty much set at LD for the foreseeable future with Thurn Mukhamadulin Kinazev Ferraro and Knyzhov, not to mention still have Vlasic for 3 more years (ugh) what sharks badly need is a young RD to take Karlssons spot

Would you prefer 2 low 1sts or a 1 medium 1st? Most contending teams won't be this high. Serious question.

I'm not familiar enough with SJ to know if they could move a LD to RD. Smith would be a good trade in a year if his numbers looked good for a full season but as of now, he's not worth as much as Petterson.

I figured Petry could be someone SJ can move in at the deadline for something if he regains his form.

It might not be a fit but I think it would be close to fair.
