Sharks have no interest in that trade. Unless there’s multiple 1sts coming back which there are none here

Really? He isn't that far removed from being a very good player. If he stays healthy and regains some if his form, the Sharks could retain salary and move him for a 2nd or 1st.

The Fish need a rebuild, multiple 2nds and 3rds help that greatly. They are on their way to nowhere fast unless they commit to a rebuild.

The Miller signing was terrible for the Canucks unless they trade him. In this scenario they lose a top 6 but add 2 younger top 6, a young D man, a good backup goalie and GAIN cap space.

Miller is a albatross waiting in the wings to hold down a team with Petterson and Hughes.

Sharks have Vlasic already chewing up cap space for a bottom pairing older D why on earth would we double down for a few mid round picks? Even if it’s fair deal (it’s not) you’re now chewing up 2 spots with old replacement level guys eating up 14 mil of your cap for multiple years and blocking younger guys with upside. Bad team management, development management, and financial management.

Granlund sucks, Hallander is nothing more than a bottom 6 forward, Ty Smith is a meh dman and VAN already has too many offensive D, no thx. Miller is still a very good player and if he needs to be moved VAN could do a lot better.

Canes have 0 interest for Granlund at this point. He needs retention to have some value(even a 4th and 6th)

True but that's what bottom feeders do. Collect picks and use cap space. Also it's a bit disingenuous to call 2 2nds and 2 3rds "mid round picks". That's like calling RNH a middle 6 forward.

Maybe Van could do better but you need a desperate team in Win now mode who doesn't care about 4 years down the road. Not many fit that profile.

If they were top round 2nds I would change my tune but fact is after the top 40 the value of picks drops and the difference between a late 2nd and early 3rd is negligible.
    High pick (1-40)
    Mid round picks (41-100)
    Late round picks (101-+)

yes we're in win now mode so there's no way we're dealing Miller for a bunch of B lvl futures and a Top 6 D. Makes no sense for us

So a high pick is basically a 1st? Ok, if that's your scale, I can't dispute that. I see it as 1st and 2nd as high, 3rd and 4th as mid, and 5th, 6th, 7th as late. It seems we're not that far off from each other.

Still the Sharks need picks and this year and next year drafts have some good depth. Plus they aren't going anywhere fast, so why not take a chance that OEL rebounds some and gain 4 top 100 picks?

Vancouver is in Win now mode? Really? Their two best players are under 25, they have an unproven goalie, fairly weak defense, a bottom 5 farm system, and a fair amount of 4th line forwards. Oh and they looked absolutely terrible for most of the season. They need a massive retool this offseason to contend. This does that.

If you think they're in Win now mode, you are in the minority.

Thats what management has said, and if you think Demko is unproven then you're in a minority. Elias Pettersson is one of the best players in the world, Quinn Hughes is a Top 5 Dman, we have amazing depth on the wings and have JT Miller playing like a beast. All this team needs is a 3C and a couple of Dmen and we are ready to contend.

Demko had a season and a half of really good hockey before this year. He also has 4 playoff games. As spectacular as they were, it is all a small smile size. Meaning unproven.

I completely agree about Pett and Hughes. Miller is a lower tier but also very good right now.

    I disagree on wing depth.

My argument is that Miller will fall off in a few years. If they trade him soon, they can free up cap space for younger players and get out from OELs contract.

They don't have the cap space to sign FA difference makers and don't have the farm to make trades.

Vancouver keeps Miller at their own peril. 15.5MM for Miller and OEL is a recipe for Petterson and Hughes demanding a trade in 3 years.

And what are the chances of that actually happening? You don’t take on all that cap for maybe a turn around and not great compensation for it. They already have so many big contracts adding another one that’s an albatross isnt helping the situation

Most experts say after the top 15 it’s 50/50 chance a player ever makes the NHL and contributes.
And in almost any draft after the 40th pick the odds of the player being an impact player become pretty slim. Hence my rankings.
That’s why I get annoyed when people think a 1st is a 1st and don’t take into account the pick being 11 or 27

I agree with your assessment on pick value but the Sharks need a rebuild and it would be better to have the picks and a bad contract that ends when their window is opening (4 years) than the reverse. Having a 5% chance at getting an NHL player (2/3 round picks) is better odds when you have 6 of those picks as opposed to 2.

Edit: I looked at the actual numbers of NHL regulars per round
    1: 31%
    2: 17%
    3: 13%
    4: 10%

So if we assume the 2 seconds are closer to thirds and the thirds are closer to fourths. Using some statistics...
Odds of one of the 4 added draft picks being a regular player: about 48%
Not great but pretty close to a coin flip. It's the same odds as a 11th overall pick.

I assume they are going to trade Karlsson and Couture to kick off their rebuild. If OEL never regains his value then they added several draft picks and have a guy coming off their books when they are aiming to be competitive again (4 years).

Still like you said we’re taking on essentially 28 mil of cap and salary for a 50% chance of drafting a solid player. I agree we need to rebuild and sharks should be taking cap dumps for picks, but 1-2 year dumps not 3-4+ years. And not without at least 1-2 firsts. Would you take Classic for the same return? Doubtful!

If I were the Hawks or Yotes I would take hin but the return would be more. They are different situations.

    Vlassic: 35yo, 7MM / 4,
    Last 5 years: 78pts, -48, injured once

    OEL: 31yo, 8.2MM / 5
    Last 5 years: 147pts, -55, injured twice

There is a chance OEL (4 years younger) could turn it around and be worth something down the road. Vlassic is what he is, a total sunk cost.

For him I would want a little more than 2 2nds and 2 3rds. Perhaps a 1st, a 2nd, and two 3rds or a 1st, two 2nds and a 3rd. NHL picks are somewhat of a crapshoot so the more the better. I don't think anyone is parting with multiple firsts for any cap dumps.
