1 first rounder too many for Fiala, and I don't think they run back VV and Sammy, but looks pretty good

Does it really make any sense at all to trade 1st/2nd round picks for a players rights when there are comparable talents available without giving up assets? Why not just sign Forsberg, Palat or Nieddereiter?

Don't get me wrong, I like Nino, but he's not comparable to Fiala. Nino's career highs for goals and points (25 and 57) came 6 seasons ago. Outside of that season, he's never hit 45 points or even cracked a 50 point pace. Fiala just scored 33 goals and 85 points with half a season of decent linemates. Even then, he still was playing with a rookie in Boldy and Freddy Gaudreau who doesn't bring much offensively (5 goals, 13 assists in 103 NHL games over 4 seasons coming into this year). Keep in mind, Nino is also 4 years older than Fiala and will be 30 by the start of training camp. You'd be buying a lot more of Fiala's peak than Nino who is more likely to see a decline than a significant improvement at this point.

Similarly, Palat is 5 years older than Fiala and despite a dominant playoff run this year, hasn't put up a full regular season like Fiala has. Forsberg is clearly a great player, you just have to convince him to sign there and not get beat on July 13th by someone more desperate than you to sign him. The argument for trading for Fiala is that you get a 26 year old (turns 26 this summer) with significant upside without having to win the free agent sweepstakes you would with Forsberg. Even if you sign him to a 7 year deal, you're getting him until he's 33, not 35, 37, or 38 like the others you mentioned. He'd still be valuable at the end of that contract whereas the others would be more likely to have fallen off by the end of the contract.
