Right now the Oilers are a playoff team but not a contender. This is based off of them becoming contenders for years to come. -------------------------- Firstly they get cap relief at the expansion draft by losing Pouliot and by buying out Sekera. This helps later on to resign McDavid. --------------------- At the Entry Draft a big move is made. It's clear the Oilers need a puck moving game changer on defense and Ekman Larsson is just that. Rumours are flying he's on the block so he's a good target. It's also clear the Oilers need a decent backup, and Domingue fills that role. They get those two for Nugent Hopkins (a young forward with loads of potential on a new team), Nurse (a solid young dman who should be good for a while) and Broissoit (a goalie prospect). On top of this they get the Oilers first two picks in the draft. The Oilers lose players they don't need and players to fill important holes. -------------------- Come July 1, the Oilers are big players. They get Shattenkirk to help out the blue line, as well as veteran Oduya with a few cup rings for experience. Willians is added up front for experience, playoff excellence and overall good play. ----------------------- With Talbot and Domingue in net, a young top 4 of Ekman Larsson, Shattenkirk, Klefbom and Larsson with guys like Oduya Benning and Gryba as depth guys the Oilers defensively will be much better. The offense has studs liken McDavif and Draisaitl with Top sixers like maroon eberle Lucic and Willians and youth with Cagguila and Puljujarvi. They will be a top team for many years.
