Alzner / Strome / Grubauer

Created by: BurnEmUp
Team: 2017-18 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 27, 2017
Published: Mar. 27, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. If Vegas is wary of taking 3 years of Brouwer, Flames could potentially add a sweetener.
2. Could change Rittich to Gillies if Caps feel his upside is better, but Rittich is only a year older and put up stellar numbers in the AHL this season alongside Gillies. Flames willing to part with either one after acquiring what they feel will be their starter for a number of years.
3. Could swap Shinkaruk out for a different forward prospect if he's not up to snuff for the Isles. Kylington is the main return piece in that Strome deal though. Flames willing to move Kylington despite being very high on him due to not only a fairly strong D prospect pool, but 5 very good NHL defensemen signed with term.

Flames add a right shot with skill, speed and pedigree to compliment the top line. Strome is also a good age to grow with the core of this team moving forward. He's also got several years of team control left.
2nd line is one of the top possession lines in the league, making the top six very dangerous overall.
3rd line is a work in progress, but is fast, has good size, tons of physicality/tenacity and with an average age of 23, plenty of room to grow.
Solid 4th line with size, grit veteran savvy and potential to chip in a little offense from time to time.

The D core is easily among the best in the league on paper, with a strong mix of size, physicality, defensive ability, offensive prowess, skating and best of all only Giordano is over 30 years old. You'd have 3 years to win with this group until a Brodie's contract expires and decisions would have to be made moving forward.

Goaltending is the gamble here, but in the way Edmonton gambled on Talbot and San Jose gambled on Jones. In other words it's a good gamble based on everything we've seen from Grubauer to this point in his career. He's the perfect age to grow with the core, but doesn't have the proven track record to command a starter's salary just yet which leaves some cap flexibility to strengthen other areas, like the D core as I have done here. You also have a decent back up to ease Grubauer into a starters work load.

Like how Vegas just takes Brouwer's contract so he doesnt play on the third line as an over priced guy. seriously but be something else to that trade. Strome needs something else added to get him.

Reading is not your strong suit is it?

Besides, Vegas doesn't have much else to pick from. Stajan, Chiasson, Bouma, Bartkowski and some B or C level prospects.

Whats with all this negativity towards Brouwer? He's having a bad season and adjusting to a new team still. Come playoff time, you'll be happy you kept him. I'm telling you right now there are plenty of teams that would trade for this guy. In the off season he was one of the most sought after free agents and now he's expansion fodder?

Expansion fodder is a little strong, but whatever you want to call it, at this point he is very unlikely to be protected IMO.

      1. Gaudreau
      2. Monahan
      3. Backlund
      4. Frolik
      5. Bennett
      6. Ferland
      7. Lazar

The first 5 on the list are obvious. As for the last two:
Ferland looks to finally be breaking out as a top six forward, is younger, cheaper and everything the Flames want in a forward. Big, strong, physical, tough, fast, doesn't handle the puck like a grenade and has a wicked shot.
Lazar they just spent a 2nd round pick on at the deadline and raved about him potentially being a piece long term.

It's a numbers game, and right now I just don't see how you can keep Brouwer on the protected list, and if anything, suggesting that Vegas would take him is more a compliment to him than an insult.

Nicely Put!!!! Agree on your protection list! Leave any of the 7 off this list to protect Brouwer and you loose them instead UNLESS you strike a deal with Vegas for a draft pick or prospect if they take someone else....
