RFA are players whose rights are still held by the original team. If you offer him a contract, the other team has a certain amount of time to decide to match the offer and keep him or let him go. If they let him go, the team getting Pearson has to give compensation to LA in the form of draft picks depending on how much the contract was for/year. 1M is nothing, 7.5M or more is four 1st round picks. So you'd have to give picks to LA and even then LA would match your offer since its pretty much what they were going to have to sign him for anyway.

Not too mention by offering a contract to sign Pearson, you'd piss off the other GM so that when Tkachuk becomes RFA, Lombardi would offer him a contract just a bit higher then you'd be able to either sign him or be willing to sign him for as retribution.
