Gustafsson has earned his contract

Created by: joshelkin
Team: 2021-22 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 23, 2021
Published: Oct. 5, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think Barry/the Isles system will shield Gustafsson's defensive zone warts. He has been as advertised on the PP. 4 assists in 3 GP on the man advantage. Every pair needs a puck mover. He should play with Mayfield and get PP time. Greene can be 7D and rotate in with Chara as needed to keep both fresh.

You have the perfect approach for Gus. It's tough to follow through with though because when you live each game...you'll find yourself down a goal.......wanting him to play, BUT you'll have to restrain yourself. Just wait for a PP.

I think the key to getting the most out of Gus is pairing him with a D who’s above average defensively and can win puck battles. In his 3 games so far he hasnt really been a liability defensively.

I don't say this to be mean, but truly rather to make you aware. You can't think that way. He'll sneak into your 2nd pair if you start thinking that way. Stay discipline. 3 games with the NYI on a PTO during the preseason as opposed to 8 years in the NHL on 4 different teams. Keep it simply with him. PP only and make sure it's less than 15 min a game.
He can skate more, but you're playing with fire.

***edit*** I'm not saying don't sign him. He'll give you what you need. I'm saying stay discipline with his usage.

I’m fully aware of Gustaffsons defensive play in the past -he can be effective at even strength with the right D partner. He will be sheltered a bit at even strength, just like he was in MTL and he had solid underlying numbers.

Preseason used as a carrot-stick thing has to end

Gustafsson is a good 2nd pair D

Very unique offense/defense balance tho

Yup

He earned it with his play in recent seasons

Excellent offensively and not a train wreck on D

Hoping for the exact same lines. Could see the extras being a little different maybe but really solid!

I (assume) Panik is one of yours. Who do you have over Kieffer? Is it Ross?

Perhaps I misworded it a bit. I agreed with who you had with extras but I expected it to be different for the actual final roster if that makes sense
