The Mike Green package is excessive. That would fetch Shattenkirk. Also, I don't think you can trade him without retaining.

I'm a Rangers fan and my thinking here is NYR can't give Shatty the 6-7 year deal he wants. This way NYR gets a RHD for 1-2 years and it costs them 1) a 1st or 2nd round pick 2) Pirri who can't stay on our 4th line 3) Clenndening who is a 7-8 D man for NYR 4) a prospect. Basically I think NYR doesn't have the quality allot of other teams have in the league when it comes to prospects so they have to offer quantity to make up for it.

Also I get confused with the retaining part at if you look at my NYR team on this site it shows they have 10.1M cap available....so there would be no need to retain if that number is correct.

So NYR can't pay 6-7M per year in FA, and that's why they trade actual assets for a someone making 5M?

It doesn't make sense to me. First, if you can stomach 5M, you can stomach 6-7 (for a much better defenseman). Second, even if Green is a puck-moving right-handed defenseman, he is older and starting to decline. I really like him, but unless Detroit retains, I don't pay a 1st rounder for him. That is to say, he should be much, much cheaper than what you propose.

On the rest of the assets... Pirri has value. If he can't stay on the team, you flip him for a pick. I could make a solid argument that Clendening is our 4-5 best defenseman. We play better when he is on the ice, compared with Girardi and especially Klein. And on Graves, he is probably our best prospect (Shestyorkin aside). We don't have prospects, why give up the few we have?

Yeah it's the term that scares me for Shatty. I view both guys a PP specialist and don't really see Shatty as a Top 4 D man so wouldn't want to commit that much term. I hear you on Green being older but shorter term. Detroit not necessarily needing to trade him would need a reason to let him go.

Girardi's contract has been brutal. Love the guys effort to sacrifice his body but he's so slow now and we really are stuck with him for the term of the deal. To me, McDonagh, Skjei, Staal, Holden, Klein are the top 5 and by default Girardi has stayed in the lineup because of contract. With Green that would give us 3 LD and 3 RD again like we had a few years ago (or Girardi as the 7th D-man).

I added Graves in to offer quantity (because we don't have quality prospects because of trading all our 1st over the years.....I realize this trade would also give up a 1st though) and see our D-core remaining the same. Plus, to me our best prospect is Gropp and Shestyorkin.

If you don't think Shattenkirk is a top 4 defenseman I have nothing else to argue. I'll just say: watch him play, or look up data about him if you're into analytics (I'd recommend you to do it). He's STL best defenseman, and no doubt a top 15 defenseman in the NHL.

Perfect, we shall agree to disagree. Sorry but I'm not an analytics guy.

It's ok if you're not into analytics. But next time you watch a Blues game, focus on his play. You'll be surprised how good he really is, and how unnoticed that goes.
