Draft - Devils fans

Created by: Devil
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 6, 2021
Published: Jul. 6, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For me, it's down to 3 options: Hughes, Clarke, Eklund (in that order). Hughes and Clarke are higher based on positional needs

These are their interviews and what they said about the Devils.

William Eklund: "Alex [Holtz] is a childhood friend. I've known him for a long time. Playing with Alex in the NHL would be a dream. It would be cool to play with him."

Luke Hughes: "It would be unbelievable to be drafted by the Devils. My brother wants me to be there. I've been to the rink. I know the franchise really well. I know Jack loves it in NJ. Really cool rink. Really cool fan base."
Luke Hughes has spoken to the Devils a couple of times and he thinks the conversations were pretty good.

Brandt Clarke: "They [Devils} seem to like me. Graeme speaks very highly of them. He loves the front office. I'd be stoked to play with Graeme. If I got to play with him for the next 10 to 15 years, that would be a dream come true"
Brandt said he met with the Devils multiple times

If Hughes isn't there at 4, I am more than happy to trade down a handful of spot if someone is desperate to get whomever is at 4. I'd go as far at 7, maybe 8. The Devils would still get someone good regardless but have a bit more flexibility on who they land should it not be Hughes. At the same time, if the Devils front office doesn't truly love Hughes, then I do hope he is drafted so there is no pressure to pass on him.

Some Devils fan might not agree with me, but I think if Hughes isn't there at #4, I'd like Guenther. I know we need defensemen, but Guenther and Holtz on the RW of Hughes and Hischier, damn that sounds good. Me personally, I'd go Hughes, Guenther, Clarke, in that order.

If we are going Best Player Available:
1. Eklund
2. Hughes
3. Clarke

If positional need:
1. Clarke or Hughes
2. Eklund

I’d love to have a Hughes brother or Clarke brother. And NJD need a top-4 d-man more than anything. But I would also love Eklund and think he will be a game-changer type talent.

And if they trade down, don’t go too far that Power, Eklund, Hughes, Clarke all slip away.

They have 3 very good options here. For me it's tough to pick, but I'd probably eliminate Clarke. Then it would be easier if one of the first 3 teams took Eklund to leave Hughes for the devils. Very interesting connections though.

Those are my three top options in the same order. I do think that Eklund is going to be taken before the Devils pick with reports that Buffalo is very interested in him. I also see a scenario where both Hughes and Eklund are taken by Buffalo (they trade Eichel for #3 and take Hughes with that pick). Whatever happens I believe that they will take one of those three and end up with a very good player.

I hope we don't trade down. We could seriously get screwed
1. Power
2. Hughes
3. Eklund
4. Beniers (TRADE)
5. Clarke
6. Edvinsson

This could backfire on us

Personally, I disagree with you. We have Holtz, Mercer, Bratt, and Sharangovich who all can play RW. For LW, we have Zacha, Kuokkanen, Foote, Bratt*. Getting Eklund who I think is the better player and fits the positional need is a better option than Guenther

I definitely agree. And the best thing about being at #4 is that one or more of Power, Hughes, Eklund, or Clarke is going to be available. We are guaranteed a player we want

See, I like Eklund but isn't he more of a playmaker? We need guys who can shoot.

That's true but Eklund is so skilled. He can do it all. He actually outscored (goals and points) Holtz in the SHL as an 18 year old

We're in agreement though, Hughes first if he's still there right?

Forgot about him when making that list lol. Guenther would be worse case scenario imo

With both Holtz & Mercer in the pipeline, Id be surprised if the threw a third consecutive first round pick at a RW. Certainly possible, but Id be very very surprised

Overthinking it, just draft Luke. If the Clarke kids turns out to be something and wants to sign with NJ to play with his brother down the road great. Time to starting winning and stop playing micromanagement with values of picks and prospects.

How is this micromanagement of picks and prospects?
It’s a conversation between taking Hughes, Clarke or Eklund. All worthy of selection at #4.

I am not a fan of a “Just draft Luke” approach because Jack is here. Take the best guy to make the team better. And there is an honest debate about who that is.
