Getting a Center

Created by: Bwells
Team: 2016-17 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 4, 2017
Published: Feb. 4, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is, of course, supposing Tampa falls further and further away from playoff contention. They have a lot of pending UFA's and they're not going to be able to sign them all. They are turning one in 3 assets. With Johnson, Blues' 1st rounder is not as valuable: he's a great player capable of carrying the Blues deep into the playoffs (and making their pick a late one).

Its going to take a regular NHL defenseman to get Johnson who is an RFA. Of your Dman already in the NHL who would you part with? I'm sure you would say no to a Johnson for Parayko straight up swap so what other option would you do. The Lightning can't wait to groom prospects and Tyler Johnson should be back a regular NHL defender. This is not a slight on Schmaltz I think he can play but he still needs seasoning and again the Lightning can't wait they need a defender. And Vannelli he just and depth throw in.

I think, if Tampa decides to trade Johnson, it's because they give up on this season. So they can wait until next September, and by then, Schmaltz is ready. Vannelli, I haven't really watched him, but apparently he has good upside as a PMD.

Besides, no team with playoff aspirations would part with a roster defenseman mid-season.

I am not saying that any team competing for the playoffs would trade a defensemen mid season, I am just saying that if the Lightning trade Tyler Johnson I think it will be for an NHL top 4 defender. Tyler Johnson is a proven 2C who can move up to 1C when needed.
