Detroit Offseason - YOUTH

Created by: NoVaSpartan
Team: 2021-22 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: May 21, 2021
Published: May 21, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Explanation:

FAs:
Bernier: resigned as he was great this year and the Red Wings can afford to throw money at him in the short term.
Staal: Mutual interest in him coming back, Wings get him on a much better contract, and brings veteran leadership to a young locker room
Hirose: 1 year deal, see where he's at next offseason
Hicketts: same reason as Hirose
Bertuzzi: One year deal, would be longer but Yzerman gives him 1 year due to injury concerns
Lindstrom: 1 year deal, should get a better evaluation after a full year next year
Vrana: Wings get good value and term on a Top 6 winger
Rasmussen: Prove it deal
Smith: 2 year deal to give them some grit
Hronek: Great D man rewarded with a good contract that is good for both sides
Dunn: Detroit gives Dunn a 4 year deal, and can play him on the first or second pairing
Nosek: Detroit brings back Nosek as a depth/4th line player

Detroit stays mostly silent in free agency, lets players that did well in the AHL like Barber have a shot in the NHL, and burys Nielsen in the AHL or on the Taxi Squad.

Draft: Red Wings grab Wallstedt at 6 and Chayka with the WSH pick.

I really like the idea of targeting Dunn. I just wonder if the price will be something Yzerman wants to pay and Armstrong accepts.

You're most likely going to need to slide one of those picks higher or switch one out for a solid prospect at one of the right positions.

Yzerman having a surplus of later 2nd round picks makes me think he would be less cautious about making a move, especially for a young LD. Normally I'd think Dunn would carry more value in a trade, but if St. Louis can't protect him, that may be the best offer they get, but Armstrong may be able to get better offers from a more desperate team.

I kinda hope they do protect him and expose Krug.

Bertuzzi's a UFA in 1 year, There's noway Yzerman is giving Bert a one year deal. At least 2-3 at probably $4,500,000 would be my guess. And Vrana is getting closer to $6,000,000 then $5,000,000.

Would be a smart decision. Maybe the Wings can do a trade like what I did for Dunn except for Krug in that situation so he can have a homecoming, I'm pretty sure most of the state would love him.

That injury makes me think Yzerman will take a chance on that, but a 2-3 year is pretty reasonable.
I have Vrana making 5 mil as Yzerman has a way of getting players for less, and he might take a cut in pay to help the team down the line, as he is definitely in their long term future. That said, I can definitely see Vrana's contract being between $5.5 and $6.5 mil.

    Youths!

But Erne &/or someone of his ilk likely available for Seattle it seems unlikely for them to take oldLG in their situation especially (not to mention he's bad)

Guessing Berggren makes the lineup next year

I must have missed Erne looking through RFAs because I agree 100%. He'd be a great pick for Seattle, and I had a hard time thinking who they would pick otherwise. Otherwise, I think Berggren may play some games for Detroit but I don't see him making the roster day one, I think he's a guy that comes in once there is an injury or two and then doesn't leave the lineup once the injured player comes back.

Is Dunn worth a lottery pick and a solid prospect? I didn't get to see him play much this season.

This is a real question no sarcasm.

What lottery pick? The offer above contains two low 2nds.

I don't think Staal stays in Detroit and I wouldn't be surprised if Detroit resigns Ryan. He did help Zadina improve this season.

Yes, one of the two 2nds he has in the offer in this AGM. So one would remain a 2nd and one would need some sort of value bump. Not sure how we got to lottery pick from there.

I think that is fair for Dunn, however I would be curious on what a =n offer for Krug would look like

Report from yesterday mentioned that there is interest from both sides for Staal, so I was basing it off of that. Ryan could definitely come back but I think he may look to get one last ride with a contending team.

Cool thanks I didn't know that. I could see Ryan go elsewhere but he could also pull a Vanek. Detroit isn't going to the playoffs so staying in Detroit then moved at the TDL by then you will have a much better view of the the playoff picture.
