Description

Looking for 20ish minute RHD. CapFriendly calls Vatanen an LD, but he can play right side.

I'm assuming Dermott is shipped out, since he plays on the left, and the depth is full. And Johnsson goes for the cap space. I'm not too picky about the trade return. Give or take, as needed.

At a reasonable cap hit, Vatantn could slide down the depth chart if Lehtonen or Liljegren can take the top spot with Rielly down the road.

you'll have to pay him more than that but yeah he would be a worthwhile pick up. he will get exposed defensively if you play him on the top pairing.

Doubtful, hes an offensive defensemen and will likely cost at least 4.5M

So what's so special about Vatanen even at 3.25m as opposed 1.25m Dermot? Cause he shoots right? If Vatanen as UFA RHD is good, he likely gets more. But maybe he isn't that good.
Even at that 21 man rosters don't work.

You're maybe right. The number is low. But with so many cap strapped teams, his injury history, and a decent number of RHD on the market, he might not get more than 3.25 million.

It's obviously tight, yes. Maybe Clifford doesn't stay, if they want the full 21 man roster. But there's usually an injury or two that opens space during the season.

If Dermott extends for 1.25, as you suggested, I'd happily keep him. But I don't think he'll be that cheap.

The injury situation is the point. If a playing has minor injury or illness, he can't be placed on LTIR, so you really don't have the cap space to recall anyone.

I think Justin Schultz would be a really solid option tbh. Colin Miller as well. Vatanen might be okay, but I’m not sure if he would bring what the Leafs are looking for
