Tampa can probably get Cirelli signed for Kadri's cap hit of less and get more term out of it. Bad asset management, no deal.

Kadri is your stopgap to Newhook, he wont be moved

agree with you. Newhook is no 3rd line center. Colorado can't afford it.

I think Colorado can afford it. At least until Newhook's ELC runs out in 2024.

Worth remembering that Newhook hasn't played a single NHL game yet, so pencilling him in as a 2C anytime before 2022 is probably optimistic.

You really think Cirelli would sign for $4.5m for 6+ years?

Imo $4.5m AAV is what he'd get on a bargain bridge deal, not a long-term contract.

I think it's a good thought on the trade, if the Tampa needs the difference in cap space for two years. Avs look to be coming into a cap crunch in 2021/22 with their own players to be signed.

Thanks. It was just an idea, thought it was interesting.

Colorado will be fine cap-wise in 2021 and 2022, given that some contracts like Cole and Calvert come off the books. It's in 2023 when Mackinnon and Byram need to be resigned that there will be a cap crunch, but even then Johnson, Compher, Donskoi, reach UFA which is a lot of cap space opened. I'd argue that it would be first in 2024 that we feel the cap crunch for real as that's when Newhook will be moving off his ELC.

You think hes worth 6M? Your put of your mind, he wont get 6 years from 4.5 but 5 or less he will. 5 walks him to FA and anything less is a bridge. He hasnt done enough to prove hes worth 1M less then Point (who had 41 goals and 92 points last year) and he has not arbitration rights. Zibanejad got a 2 year 2.6M deal coming off a a very similar season in 14/15.

The cap in 14/15 was $12.5 less than it is now, so I'm not sure why Zibanejad's AAV is relevant here.

A bridge deal is maximum 3 years because he'd hit UFA in 2024. Cirelli might sign at $4.5m x 4 years but I doubt Tampa would want to as that brings him straight to UFA. Tampa might want to go 5 years, but I don't think Cirelli would sell UFA years at $4.5m. So it's $4.5m for 3 years or less.

As for $6m, he might not be worth that right now, but an elite shutdown C who puts up 45-50 points is easily worth that contract long-term.

Cirelli might be looking for big money and term and why wouldn't he? His numbers don't jump out but he is, like guys have mentioned on here, an elite defensive player. I could see a 4.5 for a max of 3 years, but most likely something in the 6-7 range for 5 years.

I think there's a good chance they burn the first year of that ELC next year for the playoffs.

Adrian Dater confirmed 3 days ago on his twitter that Avs won't be burning a year of Byram's elc this playoff season.

I was talking about Newhook, not this season but next season. He'll go back to BC, but I think there's a good chance they do the same thing with him they did with Makar, bring him in for the playoffs after his college season is over. If they do that his ELC will be up in 2023 instead of 24.

I doubt it. That would mean that his contract would be up in the same summer as Mackinnon AND Byram. That's a lot of capspace to find in one summer. Probably best if the contracts are staggered, so that we have Mackinnon/Byram in 2023; Newhook in 2024; and Rantanen in 2025.

On the other hand, burning a year might mean that we can lock him in before he truly breaks out. And maybe a big retool in one summer to set us up for the future would be better than constantly tinkering year-to-year.

If they're in a playoff run next year and think Newhook could help them win a Stanley Cup, I don't think Sakic is going to be too worried about making the 2023 cap work. You only get so many shots at it
