I mean you want to trade Joki, sure, no problem, we can't keep all those D anyways at the expansion, and he was not draft exempt.
But couldn't Stan find a better return??? gosh, I hope he knows something.
I'm an outsider, but purely from an observer of both teams, this trade is a puzzle. Buffalo's weak side is the left, with Dahlin and riff-raff, so I would have thought that Gustafsson would have appealed to them more (plus he has experience). And I would have thought that Bowman would rather part with someone from the left side because Chicago's right is thinner. Strange.
Buffalo has been rumored to have Ristolainen on the trade block. And I think this just confirmed his exit (soon).
LHD: Dahlin, McCabe, Scandella, Pilut
RHD: Montour, Miller, Jokiharju, Bogosian
For Chicago, it doesn't matter what side they're weaker on: Nylander isn't ready for the NHL. I think he'll probably be able to settle into a 3rd line role in a year or two, but it's very possible that's his ceiling.

He probably has Dylan Strome in the back of his mind.

I was talking about the defense in both instances. To me, Chicago has 4 guys who can play on the left side plus Beaudin (plus 2 spear carriers) and 2 guys who can play on the right plus Jokiharju plus Boqvist, so it makes sense to trade someone from the left side before someone from the right. Now if one of Chicago's RD's gets hurt (or Seabrook shows his age), the Black Hawks start looking like the Ducks or Maple Leafs on the right side.
Let's look at just how bad this trade really is...
Aleski Saarela...22 years old...61 goals and 46 assists in 147 games.........he's a toss in piece for the DeHaan trade in which you gave CAR (2) players that were going to leave voluntarily on their own anyway.
Alex Nylander...21 years old...30 goals and 56 assists in 165 games...…...he's the only reason you decide to trade away a 19 year old Top 4 dman… IS THIS BIZZARO WORLD?!?!?!
What is going on with Buffalo's RHD, Jesus Christ. If they trade Ristolainen for anything valuable - especially a young forward, I will be so excited for them

If they play Scandella or Bogo with that defense I'll get so frustrated
Bad trade period. I like Alex Nylander, but he's a top 9 guy, 3rd line at most and not a very good 2nd liner (imo).
Jokiharju is a RHD and likely top 4 potential. You don't get those too often and it makes little sense to trade them for a 3rd line guy!
I cried a bit when he left the Pens ,LOL & said when he left the Pens and Ill say it again. Botterill is a hockey wizard and BUF will be a good team because of him... yah the O'rielly trade and too much to Skinner but other than that, dude has been killing it on trades.
I never liked Nylander, this gives them a pretty solid RHD/RD making it seem likely Risto gets moved... Buffalo looking like they will make playoffs this year or next... Chicago has a fair chance to get there as well so its interesting move/trade that surprised me... All these teams need a RHD but don't seem to do anything or make any moves... Guy was taken on a reach, I don't really like Buffalo's draft picks or forwards for most part so seems like best move for them.
