Addressing the Karlsson rumor and if it can work

Description
I doing this ACGM just to see if Habs can make the cap work (for now and in the future) if they are able to sign E.Karlsson at full price. Before certain fellow Hab fans on here start saying this is an over-payment, this is just testing if a huge contract is given (that's still a high probability), that it can work... and it can.

So the contract I gave Karlsson is the exact same deal that was given to Carey Price. I traded a pick (could be higher, or lower) to SJ to acquire his rights and give him the 8th year. I'm not saying MTL should do that, but I still believe it would be better than giving him a 7 year deal at $11mil+. AGAIN, just testing if a mega deal can work.

The only real issue with getting someone like Karlsson, or any big game free agent for that matter (Duchene, Panarin, etc.) is the contract of Karl Alzner. Although Habs can bury him in the minors, the strain from his cap penalty for sending him there would make things too tight in MTL. As you can see, Icing a full 23 man roster with Alzner traded still gives MTL roughly $4mil in cap space, which is great! If we remove the Alzner trade, and put him in the minors, MTL's cap space goes to less than $1mil. Which is not ideal at all. So trading Alzner should become a priority if MTL can sign a big free agent.

With regards to continuing to improve the roster and the future and MTL's cap situation. the roster I put together doesn't include a single of Habs upcoming prospects, and MTL still fully has all of its roster depth at wing. You can move anyone of (Shaw, Byron, Lehkonen, Drouin, etc.) or even Petry if needed to improve at a position of need (*cough* ,,,LD... *cough*).

TL;DR

Cap really isn't an issue for MTL getting one big UFA fish, now or in the future. Moving Alzner will become a priority at some point, but burying is still a short term solution.

Problem is, Petry won't play left. Neither will Weber or Karlsson.

So Petry or Weber need to go then. Petry obviously is the easier sell. Great stats and good contract.

If you can get a LHD for Petry... a hockey trade then your cooking.

I dont know what happens with the condition if Karlsson is traded back to the east the Sens get another 1st from the Sharks. Probably means even if you are trading for him now for his signing rights that would trigger it so Sharks wouldnt do that move

Also you cant sign him to 8 years, he has to be on your roster prior to the trade deadline to sign him for that 8th year, if you doing a sign and trade, its probably going to have to be a 1st plus something else to offset the 1st they give up by trading him back tot he east prior to July 1. Bc why would the sharks do that if they dont get a real asset out of this?

I agree, Habs tried Petry at LD once and it didn't go well. but moving Petry or Weber doesn't necessarily need to happen. MTL would still have cap space and Wing depth + a crap ton of prospects that can be used to acquire a LD. Having a RD of Karlsson on the 1st pairing, Weber on the 2nd, Petry on the 3rd might be a bit of overkill, but still could be awesome if MTL can add at LD.

for the first part of your comment. this is what's is written on the condition you speak of here on cap friendly :

Sens receive a 1st round pick from the Sharks (no later than 2022) if Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season.
****Result: Condition not met, no pick is transferred.

I'm not sure about the 2nd part of your comment. I believe any team would have until June 23rd (the date teams can start talking to other teams) to give 8 years, I could be wrong though. I'll look into it.

thats the kicker, clarity on the reserve list and if that triggers an additional 1st if his rights are traded. No real idea in the CBA what date is considered part of the 2018/19 when it comes to contracts, rights, conditions etc.

      @Banks

If San Jose were to trade Karlsson's rights to an eastern conference team before June 23rd, would they have to give a 1st to OTT?
