But he would, and you'd be insane to pay Marner $12mill.

your false hope that these guys will just give up years of their prime on ridiculously team friendly contracts because you’re the Toronto maple Leafs is laughable. 0/1 already after the Nylander situation

Having top players making top dollar is not cap hell. Having no cap, a team that isn't good enough and many bad contracts that are almost impossible to trade is cap hell. Look at Edmonton, or Nashville, or Vegas, or Winnipeg, or Tampa (More so next off season) as teams with way worse cap situations than the Leafs or what this would be.

That being said, this isn't going to happen.

enjoy.

Gladly take the 4 1st rounders, and drop less than 10 mil on a free agent like panarin, duchene, skinner, etc.

by ridiculously team friendly, do you mean the same contract as the art ross winner? Even though he produced substantially less?

"Top dollar" does not equal almost Connor McDavid's salary. Top dollar is 10 million at most, maybe 11 million for generational talents (or people in that realm of good). Also, you're giving up your next four first round picks for him. What happens if being a wild card team doesn't stick and you fall out of a playoff spot next season through chance or injuries? There's a reason you don't offer-sheet top players. It straddles you cap-wise and kills your future.

Not really he can easily move staal, nino, Williams and that’ll from up 9-14 mill plus u can trade de haan for a cheaper defence that’ll do the same job even Hamilton could go at any time. There are plenty of ways to get cap space none of these guys have bad contracts.

During the last two years, Aho and Marner have identical stats. You could certainly argue Aho is the superior player, but somehow you want the Canes paying a ver fair 9.5m for Aho and 12m for Marner. Canes aren't doing that.

I think the leafs would take this all the way to the bank.. with one caveat, because we now have so many 1st round picks, and you're trading Faulk in this agm anyway, we'll give you the Muzzin offer. You get one of your 1st back, a couple b prospects.. and with so many picks we'll give you a second to retain half his salary.. and because with have all that cap space that we woula spent on Marner, we'll use some of that to go sign Duchenne.

But I doubt the Canes would do this for reasons outlined above. Shame, really.

I dont think this os Marner business is a legitimate threat. Which is why the leafs shouldn't be strong armed into signing Mitch to anything that is a penny more than the Kucherov deal. If it is a real threat , than we should take the 4 1sts everytime, and make adds like what is stepped out above. It isnt hard to see what approach makes the leafs a better team...

Marner is the best player on his team. He wants to get paid like it, especially just now being 3 months removed from Matthews getting 11.4. He just wants 11. If the Leafs don’t give it to him, someone will

I understand why Marner might feel that way for the comparison with Matthews, but NHL salaries are based on league comparisons. But if we go be club comparison, in the post Marner makes 25% that the just as good home grown Aho. By your logic, shouldn't Marner get just 9.5m?

Fine by me.

I like the idea of trading his rights to Colorado for Makar if thats his demands. Marner can then try to convince Sakic why he he's worth 11m. He wouldn't be the best player on that team, that would be MacKinnon- and he makes like 6M and change.

Man, Marner would have a tough time getting Sakic to believe he's better than Rantanen (and Ive yet to see one AGM with Rantanen at AM money)..

Oops! Marner just bluffed himself into 9 M and change aav contract, probably the same contract Toronto offered him, except now he's playing in Colorado..

and, in this example the Leafs get Makar plus then maybe use the money budgeted for Marner to sign Duchene. If i was Dubas and this opportunity presented itself I wouldn't really care what Mitchy wants. Id make that trade and ufa signing all day long knowing full well the leafs are a better team because of it..
