LA Kings complete rebuild

Created by: FvonEicke
Team: 2019-20 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 2, 2019
Published: Apr. 2, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In my opinion the only way to contend for the Cup is through a complete rebuild. This is how I would start it. Then I would try to trade up some of the draft picks and maybe sign a stopgap UFA. At the deadline I would trade Callahan, Eakin and maybe guys like Clifford or Lewis.

Both Tampa and Buffalo reject those trades in a heartbeat.
You way over value Doughty. His contract is terrible (at ages 35-37 he'll be making 11mil...) and defensively hes had a bad year (-34 with 101 giveaways to only 21 takeways)

Teams aren't giving up their futures for overpaid, aging players. Teams would prefer to overpay for an UFA and keep their picks or prospects which you so desperately want.
Take Koptitar who is a 10m cap hit and might be a 60 point player. You might not be able give him away due to his 10m never ending cap hit. Only way he could be traded if some cap or similar cap is traded back to Kings

I would want to spread out the first round picks over a few years. 6 1sts in one draft. What if it turns out like the 2014 or 2012 draft class? Too many eggs in one basket.

Trades are mostly in favor of kings..

In the Buffalo trade, I'd say hell no from a Kings perspective. 2 Stanley cups, 2 Selkes, Captain, leads by example, plays the right way (200 ft player) gets you $10 million a year. He's had a bad year but so has the whole team. He may get 60 this year but he averages 73 points a season over his illustrious 1000 game career. For Doughty, I'd say drop Callahan and one of the firsts and the trade would be more on par. Sure he's had a horrendous year but I think it's logically irresponsible and lazy to have this one year dictate what someone would believe about his overall value. He's won a Norris, in the top 3 in voting for Norris a few teams, 2 Stanley cups, 2 gold medals( won his first gold medal at 20 yrs old). I'd say him and Hedman would easily be considered the best and most complete defensemen in the league. It would probably go to Hedman whose long stride/reach and size allow him to be more physically imposing overall where Doughty has to be the smartest player on the ice at his position to be as effective. Watch a King game sometime and see how much Doughty controls the flow of the game in the defensive zone. He almost never turns the puck over, makes great passes(often behind his back which is extremely difficult in its own right) and positionally sound(rarely out of position or beat one on one)
