Who wants Bickell

Created by: Alankrz
Team: 2016-17 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: May 16, 2016

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Getting Bickell off the books allows Hawks to keep Ladd and have a solid top 6. I've added Panarin's bonuses and was very conservative with what the Hawks would get back in a package trade that includes Bickell and rights to Shaw. Hartman needs to be the new Shaw (or Baun or Hinostroza). Hawks get a #4 defenseman either in the trade or on the free agent market.

Due to Panarin's bonus there's only about 1,000,000 available to use on the defense in this scenario, which should get Ben Lovejoy.

I still think the Hawks could keep Ladd for 4.5 million cap hit. Bowman can give him a front loaded contract for 6 years so Ladd can get his pay day. That presents problems for resigning Panarin's and Teavo next year, but cross that bridge when we get there.

The Hawks don't like to rush their prospects into the NHL so I don't expect to see Motte or Smaltz (if he's signed) or Forsling. Maybe Polka, we'll see.

Not likely getting Shaw on a 1 year deal for 4.5 considering he was asking 6X6 from Winnipeg a couple months ago.

The Hawks would be better off just signing Shaw and not resign Ladd.

Good to know about what the market is for Ladd. I didn't think he'd get up to 6,000,000 per year. Any thoughts on the likelihood of a trade involving Bickell?

bickell brings down the value the hawks send in a trade so something like, shaw, bickell for a mid round pick(3rd maybe?)

Well, Bryan Bickell was waived twice last season I believe, with no takers. This season he is due to make $4.5M along with his cap hit of $4.0M in, at last, his final season with Chicago. Good riddance!! Unfortunately, he will be on the Hawks' books for $1M this season and $1.5M next year when he is bought out. While us fans couldn't be more thrilled with Panarin, his bonuses (as well as other overages) will be more than $3M in additional cap hits. With next to no money to spend and Quenneville's boy toy Shaw still needing at least $3M, I simply do not see how Bowman works it this time around without another "big" moving on. That's reality, folks!

I made some updates based on your comments about Ladd. 4.5 million on a US team gets more money to Ladd than it would in Canada due to higher taxes in Canada. I did make it a 6 year contract.

good riddance is right about almost being done with Bickell. But I am optimistic that packaging Bickell with another asset, which was not possible during the season when the Hawks were in "win now" mode, will have a market. A buyout wouldn't be a good option because it would make less cap space available next year when Panarin and Teavo need new contracts. Maybe the Hawks will retain a portion of Bickell's cap hit in a trade to get the deal done. Any thoughts on a packaging Bickell with Teavo in a trade?

In reality, Chicago has to just let time take its course. Once Bickell and Rundblad are off the books not by buyout but by just letting their contracts finish, then they might be able to salvage the rest of the team. Trading them will be hard but if a team takes them then by all means thats gravy. Just don't see it happening.

I agree 100% with not buying out Bickell. We all know Stan is not going to give up on a trade that includes Bickell so let's see some more ideas.

Easiest solution? Trade Bickell with 50% retained and a high draft pick. Possibly a 2nd rounder. Means keeping the team you have above minus Ladd and Lovejoy and keeping Shaw. The real problem though is the following year.

"The Hawks don't like to rush their prospects into the NHL..." You are right, they DO like to trade them, tho!

Any thoughts on including Motte in a Bickell trade? He's young and his value is rising. Can't wait to see US vs CAN this Saturday for the IIHF World Championships.
