Muzzin easily worth more than Scherbak and a 2nd without you dumping Alzner's 4 million. Thanks but no thanks

Send them Weber, LA loves players on massive contracts that pay players huge dollars on terms that run into their late 30's.

Alzner with 625k retained = 4,000,000
Scherbak = 863,333
Total = 4,863,333

Muzzin = 4,000,000

Difference = 4,863,333 - 4,000,000 = -863,333

That doesn't make sense if that's your rebuttal, and Scherbak won't be a significant impact to our team at all short term. Given I've talked with other Habs fans and they were more than willing to swap Patches for Muzzin, and seeing the package Patches got Montreal from Vegas, Muzzin could fetch more than this with a more serious contender.

I really don't understand why you knock Doughty's contract so much. Not like the Leafs won't be paying 35 year old John Tavares the same amount..

Tavares signed his contract when he was 27, Doughty will turn 30, 3 months into his 11 million dollar contract and it runs a year longer. So Tavares will be turning 35 when his contract runs out. Doughty will be 37 when his ends. How many 37 year old top flight defenceman are in the league currently? How many top flight centres are 34 turning 35? Also defenceman get hit a lot more than forwards, block more shots etc, that all puts more strain on the body.

How many of said 34-35 top flight centermen are even near Tavares' 11 million dollar cap hit?

I hear you and I don't really like arguing in favour of the Tavares contract because I am not sure I would have done that deal had I been in charge. I think in TO's case it does cause some problems. It means they have to fight young guys to take less than they likely deserve because too much is going to Tavares. That being said, if you are going to overpay someone, a franchise centre isn't the worst way to go. He'll probably be an elite player for 4-5 of the 7 years he's under contract and then be very effective for the rest of the contract. My point is he is 2 years younger than Doughty and that contract is 1 extra year. I would never give term to a guy in his 30's its a death trap. In my opinion, star players should get their big 8 year deal when they come off their ELC's that way you are paying top dollar for a players best years, rather than bridging them and then giving them huge contracts that run into their mid 30's. Just look at Corey Perry, that is what happens when you give big money to guys leaving their prime.

Neither contract is ideal long term at its length x AAV. Getting paid matters more than playing the game you're getting paid to play nowadays in most cases I'm finding.

I think there will be a shift in how contracts happen in the near future. I think the old guard is slowly leaving and guys will now start looking at everything objectively. Players have their best years in hockey from ages 22-29 and then start declining to various degrees. And yet still most players are getting their big contracts when they are between 27-29, that is despite so many cautionary tales of guys who got their big contract and very quickly started declining.

Many fans will say, look at Malkin he's still deadly and he's 33 or whatever. And yes he is an anomaly, but at the same time I am not sure Malkin is as good as he was when he was 25, still amazing though. But Crosby has definitely started to trail off a bit, still very good but age catches up to us all and salaries should reflect that.
