TOR - CAR Trade

Created by: Driedger18
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 3, 2018
Published: Oct. 3, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Say what you will about the extra pieces in this deal but i dont see how a Gardiner for Faulk deal cant happen. Leafs are looking for a right shot and Carolina could use a better left shot.

Thoughts?

The thing is we need a shutdown dman or a 2way physical dman for Reilly and Faulk though skilled is neither.

I agree with that wholeheartdly. Im just trying to look at teams with surpluses of right shot d men and carolina was one. Who would you target instead?

Some time ago a lot of people were suggesting Tyler Myers for Gardiner because both are pending UFA's. That idea still has some appeal, at least to me.

I think Carolina would much prefer to get a forward or a forward prospect for Faulk. They don't need a LH man either. They've got Slavin, de Haan, and they want Hayden Fleury to be a regular in the lineup. Plus Jake Bean coming up at some point. They certainly didn't sign de Haan to be 3rd pairing. This just doesn't interest them. I don't think the price for Faulk will be very high, but this doesn't fill any need for them.

Edit: didn't mean to give 1 star, how to I undo that?

And one of the Florida "extra" RD's (Psysk, Petrovic or even Weegar) might be a good fit.

Im good with that idea. Both are UFA so could both resing with new teams or both walk and no team makes out better then the other in the deal that way. Im for that as a rental because i dont think the leafs will resign Gardiner for what he will be asking for so acquiring something you could potentially resign at a better number works for me.

Fair points. I didnt realize they signed de Haan for a longer term deal. Could the leafs offer a forward to make this deal then?

and i think just click on what rating you would like, not sure you can undo it and have no rating

i like any of those three as well. I would think Gardiner could get one of them and something else though. Thoughts?

I wouldn't be greedy. I would be happy to trade Gardiner even up for Pysyk, get a little something for Petrovic get a little something more for Weegar. I would even explore the idea of exchanging first-round picks so that Toronto moves up some.

Oh for sure. I wasnt saying Gardiner for one of them and Borgstrom as well. More like one of them and then maybe Jonathan Ang or a 2nd or 3rd next year?

If Nylander and the Leafs agreed to 6.5m, he'd be a Leaf. The trade. , Gauthier and Nielsen really mean nothing. As a Leaf I'd rather have Gardiner for a year and then have cap space, rather than two years of Faulk's high priced mediocrity.

Ang is a good thought. So is Patrick Bajkov. Florida is a little light on draft picks this year, so I don't think they'd go for trading away another good one next year. I'd be satisfied with Gardiner and moving up in the 2019 draft for Petrovic or even Weegar. But some of the other Toronto guys may shell me for that.

Nylander may sign for more but that wasn’t really the point of this thread. Also Gauthier and Nielsen weren’t meant to be a big issue in the trade. Just not a fan of them and add them to any deal lol Gardiner for Faulk was my original idea and we are just trying to find a deal that works to move him for a right handed d man back ideally.

Ya I could do either of those kids with weegar or peteovic I think. I do like the idea of swapping picks to have a higher one in the draft as well though. Either would work for me

I wish fans would get off the notion that a RHD is so important. GOOD defensemen is the issue. So this year it's Zaitsev, Hainsey (who is more than competent on the right side) and Ozzie. Holl might be the 4th.
Fact is there are more left handed shooters than right handed so odds are a team is lucky to three NHL competent Dmen. IMO there just isn't a move to made now. Other teams have the same problems trying to 5,6,7 NHL competent Dmen. As teams drop of the playoff race, then more Dmen might be available. Until then the Leafs have to dance with their current guys. At least the Leafs have some guys in the minors who good enough if recalled, Borgman and Rosen, yea I know they aren't right handed, plus a few others.

You are exactly right on both of these. Petrovic would be perfect if Oz can step up and play with Reilly. And Myers could step in right away and play with Reilly. There is a lot of sense in these trades.

The hurricanes are loaded on D and have no need for any in a trade for faulk they need high end forwards and a number 1 center or at least a high end 2nd line center

ok jake gardiner is a black hole on d and puts up points because he plays on a very offensive minded team. He is a free agent at the end of the year so very little value to most teams.

Nylander wants more money thus the reason for his holdout. Think more like 6.5 million a year on a bridge deal or 8 million on a long term deal. The leafs don't want to pay that much thus the problem.

I doubt the panthers have any need for gardiner they have there only offence d man in yandle don't need to very poor defensive d man.

gardiner would be lucky to get either psysk or petroviv both are younger cheaper and signed to longer term. They both can play at least solid d to unlike gardiner.

faulk is above average on offence and yes mediocre on d also not very high priced at 4.8 million.

Not true. Petrovic is a UFA at the end of this year and Pysyk is only signed through the expansion draft, so that consideration is non-existent.

"mediocre" on defense? He's minus 22, minus 18 and minus 26 over the last three years. I defy you to find a defenseman with a worse record who's still in the NHL. And "not very high-priced"? He's in the top 10% of defensemen.
