Dubas would be ripped for not matching or at least matching then shopping Nylander. Yeah, it is probably gonna be a lotto pick, but you can get a lot more for Nylanders than a lotto pick and a 2nd and 3rd.

I do understand... if they let Dubas negotiate for a bridge deal at 4-5M... they will be OK in 2 years as Marleau will come off the book.

Agreed, if I’m a team in the division with cap space I’m forcing Dubas hand and almost guaranteeing the Leafs lose one of either Nylander or Marner because we all know losing Matthews isn’t an option. Don’t be surprised though if ARZ makes an offer sheet for $12 mil plus per yr for Matthews

The "money limits" of signing RFAs have risen. I think it very possible in the future we are going to see more offer sheets. I don't know if this offer really hurts the Leafs that much. It's just about 1m over their expectation to sign Nylander, so the Leafs could sign without much pain Nylander would have the question whether is wants to go a lousy team like Montreal, so maybe he declines.
Lets say the Leafs don't match. They have now about 7m in hand that they had for Nylander to spend on other player(s), and three picks, with one almost guaranteed in be in the top ten.
