the fact that there "could" be more options of interested teams for Patches as a rental is irrelevant. MTL wants the value of Patches on a long term deal, sure it's more of a complex deal, but that's kind of why it's taking so long. and there's still lots of time this offseason to get something done.

It's relevant because it's the most likely outcome. This sort of sign-and-trade is extremely rare for a reason. Montreal is not likely to get the increased value that come with it. And even if they can make it work, there return can be limited because they simply don't have much leverage in a sign-and-trade. Again, Pacioretty is in control of that situation.

A trade as a rental with the possibility of a later extension is far more likely. Like I said, Habs fans are being overly optimistic here, which I don't understand, especially considering the management of the team.

it's overly optimistic to think Patches could've of gotten a top 6 C for sure, not when asking for a 1st, 2nd + prospect when when Rick Nash gets moved at the deadline for a 1st + prospect (who was a 2nd rd pick) + young roster player (Spooner)
