    Rights to Erik Karlsson.

Literally Leafs can also wait and sign Karlsson when he becomes UFA.

If trade happens in 2018 then Leafs have more than enough salary cap to accomodate Karlsson's 6.5M.

There's one key thing here that throws a wrench in this lineup. Whether we trade for EK now or sign him as a UFA...his $11m cap hit starts during the 19-20 season when we still have Marleau's contract on the books.

Haven't you just proven that it's not possible. No cap, roster of 20. You've unrealistically squeezed some others RFAs are with their salaries to fit in EK.

You are correct. But they can make it work. Many ways. The most out of box one would be-> 1st year salary: 1M and Bonus(for playing 1 second):10M.

Signing bonuses count towards the cap too. You take the total salary + all bonuses and divide it by the length of the contract to get the cap hit. Only two ways it would be possible are:

    a) leafs win the cup this year, Marleau retires, and the leafs trade his contract + a sweetener to someone looking to hit the cap floor
    b) EK loves the leafs so much he agrees to a 1 year contract at $1m before signing an 8 year deal for $11m. Not exactly something that's ever happened before or likely in the future

The league killed the idea of Tavares signing 1 yr for the max with the understanding that he would sign an extension. Cap Circumvention that is why he signed a striaghty7 yr 77M deal. the NHL would not allow this.
