You need a 23 man roster on opening night... So yes, cap hell.

Nice job with the roster.

A lot of people on here mistake 'cap hell' as having a glut of desirable assets

Also that D is horrible and the wingers aren't optional for Kadri..... yes you have desired assets which you won't be able to keep if you don't want to be scored on 4 times a game....

Actually you can roll a 20man roster on opening night....can't have more than 23.

"23-man Roster
There may be a maximum of 23 players on each Club's playing roster at any one time from the commencement of the NHL regular season through the trade deadline. Prior to the start of the season, each Club must submit to the NHL its "Opening Day Playing Roster" which shall be comprised of not more than 23 players. Each Club must have a roster of at least 20 players, composed of 18 skaters and two goaltenders. Players on Injured Reserve do not count in the 23-man limit."

That and a lot of Leaf haters. I would want nothing to do with a aging Boychuk.

3rd line wingers of Johnsson and (preferably) kapanen are more than adequate 3rd liners who can all skate, defend, and bury the biscuit. Kadri could very well be the best #3C in the league right now.

Defence isn't ideal but Leafs would be well positioned to trade forwards for d if it remained a glaring weakness. The point is that that Leafs do not have a single contract that would be hard to trade, if cap space is required.

23 man rosters have to be submitted on opening night, after that the leafs could drop to 20.

Also, Marleau's contract expires the year after (2020/2021) to open up some cap room for a defense man or two.

I'm quoting from the NHL's hockey operations guidelines: http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26377

You may be right...but that's what their rules say....23 is the max, 20 is the min...but the way I read it, it doesn't say a team HAS to have a 23 man roster submitted on opening night.

I read the same guidelines. But I'm 99% positive you must submit a 23 man roster on opening night. Why else would they title it "23 man roster"?

I really don't know. Best guess is because that's the max roster size, and, most teams keep 3 guys in the press box.

I didn't know the rule...googled it...and found that....with the Leafs AHL team 4km away, it makes it possible...but realistically I don't know of any team that doesn't keep at least one guy on hand in case someone gets sick just before game time or gets injured in warm-ups.
