Yes, I already proposed this creative way to circumvent the CBA in order for the Leafs to use their excess salary cap to their advantage. At the max salary plus a max term contract behind it, $95 million total money would be a pretty strong play for the franchise center. The extension of course would be done immediately following the initial 1 year deal.

And then Tavares blows a knee out or take on a career ending injury and loses out on 10s of millions of dollars. There is 0% chance JT takes a one year deal. Wherever he ends up. It will be the max term he can get.

The extension is done immediately, not after 1 game, not after 2 games, the extension would be done immediately after the 1 year max contract deal is approved by the league. There would be no opportunities, except for off-ice randomness, for Tavares to possibly get injured.
