Description
I'm treating this like a crowd sourcing/collaborative thing so I'm starting with this step, the RFA signings. Leave your thoughts in the comments on wether I need to go higher or lower and longer or shorter on contracts here.

The big fish here is William Nylander. With Dubas becoming GM I think it increases the odds that Will Ny is signed to a long term contract and not a bridge (7-8 years) so theres my reasoning here. I went with 8 years @ $6.5M AAV

The other highly important RFA is Johnsson and he's actually tougher for me to pin down in terms of value and length. I went with taking a gamble on a guy who looks like a potential top 6 winger for a very low AAV on a long term deal (think sort of the Calle Jarnkrok deal). I went 7 years @ $1.8M AAV

Aaltonen is another guy who has a shot at the big club next year as the 4C or a winger. He'll likely get a similar deal to his ELC last season so thats what I went with. Ditto for Carrick.

Everyone else is of minor impact in the short term or a Marlie for the next year or two.

Have at it people!

PS leave your potential trade targets (or trade chips) in the comments as well for part 2

Johnsson is getting a bridge deal. No sane person would sign < 2 million for 7 years. He may get 2 - 3, maybe even 4 years at most, but I'm banking around the 2 - 3 year mark.

You may be right,,,but...Johnson is just three years away from being a UFA, which is unlike most players coming off their ELCs. So while the the 7 year seems insane....to who? Look at the Jarnmark with Nashville, long term deal at 2m per seems like a steal for the Preds.

Just a note to the roster, you would think Dermot and Grundstrom are almost guaranteed spots, and I think Borgman also.

i want willy to sign as long a deal as possible but i don't think he gets 8 years. would say more likely number is 6. The aav is pretty fait, though. I don't think, though, that johnsson gets 7 years Contract is very team friendly but he will probably take 3-4 mil at around maybe the same aav. Really like the idea of this post, btw

Oh I agree with you I'd also add that Moore has a good chance at making the Leafs as well from the Marlies (actually out of camp I think Moore has a better shot than Grundstrom) with this though I ignored that. When I get to step 2 they'll be in there.

I kinda ignored Moore (maybe at my peril). I wonder if he just a good AHLer or does he really have the tools to be an NHLer. Good luck to Moore and the prospects, a team can't have too many players ready for the NHL.
It's always interesting on training camp, who steps up to get a job.

I agree with the 'crowd' re: Johnsson. It would be an awesome signing for the Leafs if he agreed to that...but as a player I'd be more inclined to have confidence in my abilities (for better or worse), and gamble that I can prove I'm a mainstay top 6 winger. If so I'm likely making between 2.5-6m throughout my carreer depending on production....higher if I have a couple break-thru seasons. The $1.8 number makes more sense on a 2-3 year deal. Gives him a few years of certainty and some time to raise his stock by the time the next negotiating period comes along.

Hard to fault the logic in the Nylander signing.

I'm interested to see what the team decides to do with Carrick. I'd almost rather give Polak 3 years at $1m per to be the #6/7 dman
