Take bad contracts for assets

Created by: RC333
Team: 2018-19 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 4, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trevor linden recently said he's looking to not spend to the cap limit but instead take on bad contracts and gain assets. This is probably because the team won't contend, but also because the Canucks will host the draft and probably wanna keep their fans entertained during it!

Seabrook allows him to come home and Chicago to spend some cap to get competitive again

Lucic gets to come home, oilers get a shitty contract off their books so they can sign better wingers for mcdavid and draisaitl

Canucks start Pettersson Dahlen Juolevi lind Gadjovich jasek in the AHL which explains the lack of re-signing of some AHL forwards like molino, ECT.

I actually kind of like everything about this but Granlund will not garner that kind of money.

Nice and interesting. You could probably have signed EKane here as well?
You now can trade one of your RHS D's for a younger one lefty... How about Reilly from Tor, can you find a way to get him? Tanev++?

Chiarelli can blow some trades, but the Oilers have no need for Hutton. Fast skating shooting wingers, right handed puck moving defenceman, and/or back up goaltending only apply.

I like this philosophy but oh man is that Seabrook contract bad. I think the asking price should start with two first round picks for SIX YEARS?!?! of Seabrook. Worst contract in the league and the Canucks are already sitting on that Eriksson contract.

Yeah, Edmonton would probably want to see Leipsic or Virtanen coming back over Hutton, but not having to retain on that albatross is nice.

If Vancouver wants to fully embrace the tank, could they be interested in one slightly used Kris Russell?

No way Virtanen comes back or Leipsic comes back. Especially Virtanen he's really stepped up, wouldn't be surprised if he starting to put up larger stats next year!

Care to justify that? Virtanen's still stapled to Vancouver's 4th line (as of April 3rd via Dailyfaceoff). In his last 10 games, Virtanen is 1-1-2 with 6PIMS and is a -2 (via hockey-reference). The Sedins retiring doesn't open a roster spot for him; neither of the twins played RW. He sees no PK or PP time (via LeftWingLock). The only thing that gives him value is potential; he's still young and might pan out as a 3rd liner. Vancouver ends up giving up less by retaining Hutton and sending Virtanen.

FWIW: Leipsic is 2-3-5 in that same span, sports 8PIMs, and is a -5. Still a 4th liner, and sees only 2nd unit PP time for special teams. On optics alone he looks like he might produce more for the Canucks, which also makes him more attractive to the Oilers.

So yeah, justify why moving on from either of them is something the Canucks shouldn't do. I'll even revise my offer: Lucic and the 2019 1st for Leipsic and the 5th. The Oilers don't need another LHD. It'd be only fair to tell you, but Hutton probably stinks this season because the entire Canucks team was awful. They should honestly look at keeping him around.

I get what your saying. And I take back my point in Leipsic for sure. But Virtanen doesn't really play as bad as his stats suggest. If you watch him play lately in the last quarter of the season he's been playing so much better. The guy is just very unlucky IMO. There's been many games including yesterday where he is our best player. That includes some games in the beginning of the season where even Boeser was playing.

Virtanens still young and power forwards take awhile to develop which is why I suggest he sticks with the canucks for awhile to get things going. To me and many fans he's been sticking out the most in recent games. He's just usually stuck with crappy liberates. Only recently he's be playing with Leipsic and Gaudette but since all are young they are flying but not consistent on the score sheet

I'm good with given Leipsic for sure
