Description
Caps GM Brian MacLellan joked to the press that Carlson might want 8M. Now that Carlson is at the top of the defensemen in scoring, joke is on Maclellan. Can he afford his superstar defenseman at 8M per year?

So the Sabres pay picks to take on a cap dump. Yeah this is pretty foolish

Beaulieu has had a rough season but I'd still say he's better than Orpik. The reason Orpik is top 10 in hits and blocks is because when he's on the ice his team never has the puck. And on top of that Buffalo gives you picks? No from the Sabres.

Honestly it’s impressive you found that many nice words for Orpik. He’s a traffic cone now

Are you saying that because you're a Sabres fan, and its trendy to hate on tough hockey players, or because you actually have evidence to support the opinion you'd like to be true? The league rule on hits is that they count the ones that take the pucks away from the other team, and someone did a study and found that for each extra hit a team has, compared to its opponent, its chance of winning a game goes up 1%. Since Orpik still averages 3 hits per game in the regular season and four in the playoffs, it might not be a coincidence that his teams have won at least one playoff round for five straight seasons.

How are Beaulieu's postseason statistics, again? 4 points 16 hits and 15 shot blocks in 17 games, with a max of 7gp per season, and an average of 13 minutes per game? It's a small sample size, and there are definitely reasons for that. Yeah, I don't think he's exactly better than Orpik, but I'm sure he'd appreciate your saying so.

He's a lot younger, and who knows what he might learn in Hershey, or South Carolina, or, above, practicing with Carolina.

I think the Caps like Orpik. They just like Carlson even more.

Honestly I could care less about late round picks. But if you start off trying to sweeten a deal by throwing one in, people assume you think they player you're giving up is trash, and there's already a lot of trash talking on Orpik, so I just threw in some meaningless late picks as a way to get readers to ask why I think Orpik is still better than an overpriced 25 year old benchwarmer whose plus/minus is currently twice as bad as Orpik's, even though Orpik plays three more minutes a night with 4% more difficult zone starts and faces tougher competition.

    Shall I continue?

Look, the other day, a Sabres season ticket holder posted on here that the Sabres have talent but need leadership. That they need someone to show their defensemen the right way to play defense, and how to show up every game and work hard. I don't think there's a better teacher for those traits, and all the evidence I need is that Orpik's last three defensive partners are Niskanen, Schmidt, and Carlson.

You don't wanna throw in picks? Fine. Don't care. You don't want Orpik. No big deal.

But insulting him for being slow, as a proxy for making fun of his age? The numbers don't support that hypothesis, and it makes you look incredibly small minded.
