Leafs 2018-19 Tampa Bay Model - Weber, Nurse + JT ofcourse

Created by: Britishbulldog
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 10, 2018
Published: Mar. 13, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Yes, I realize that there is over $6 MIL available so Nylander could get $6.25 and Tavares could get $11 MIL +. That's not the point. What I would like to see if the Leafs get character players that want to win while they still get paid really well.

Yzerman has assembled a group of players who want to win while being compensated fairly. It reminds me of multiple Cup winning Crosby leaving money on the table.

Tavares has described wanting to be on a team that wins and that even his last contract allowed him to make a lot of money as will his next contract. As a UFA Stamkos took a long term $8.5 MIL contract, Norris candidate Hedman took $7.9 MIL and young super star Kucherov signed a 3 year bridge deal of $4.8 MIL. They wanted to keep the team together to win. If a player couldn't agree on a fair contract then they got traded.

If the Leafs management offer Tavares and Matthews 'Stamkos' money, offer Nylander and Marner a 3 year 'Kucherov' bridge deal and then they could look to bring in a 1st pairing dman upgrade that would complement Rielly's speed and offensive ability.

Leafs Forward depth is decent. Tavares would put them with the top teams in the league.

On defence there is a need for some size which Weber would give and Nurse would give with good skating.

With RH Nylander, Marner, Kapanen, Leivo and upcoming Bracco there is a great opportunity to trade 20 goal scoring, hard working Brown for an asset.

Montreal doesn't have rookies playing anywhere near good enough to cause the Performance Bonus crunch that the Leafs have. They are given a 1st Rd Leafs Pick to help with the rebuild for taking the last 2 years of the uninsured Horton contract. They also get 6 years younger on RHD and get annual savings to boot. A 2019 1st round pick WPG is added to help with Montreal's rebuild for retaining a bit of Weber's contract.

No cap space for Matthews and Marner. Underpaying Nylander. Edmonton laughs. Tavares isn’t signing for cheap money to be the 3rd LINE CENTER. He’s not signing to play BEHIND NAZEM KADRI. Come on. What a joke. -100000000 stars

first of all, those players are playing in tampa bay, not toronto. taxes, media and weather have huge impacts on player contracts. also, crosby didn't take a discount, he took 14.5 % of the cap hit (which i believe is the max a team can spend on 1 player), so in 12-13 season, the cap was 60mill. also, the edm trade is horrible, and so is the mtl trade. weber is still an elite defenseman, and u want us to retain as well?

Doubt if Gardiner is worth a first in his last contract year. You indicate that if players don't agree to the Leafs offer, these players lack character. No reason why Matthews would really accept that deal....he might. And you do run the risk of losing Marner and Nylander in as UFAs a year or two after these RFAs are expired. Admitting that is choice both sides makes
I admit there is large opinion on Weber, his future playing value and his contract. But you can get a good UFA Dman for 6m without giving up two first rounders. To me stay away from Weber especially at that cost.

" What I would like to see if the Leafs get character players that want to win while they still get paid really well" That's a nice motherhood statement buy really doesn't mean anything. You still need good, great players with character who obviously want to want (other wise they wouldn't have good NHL character would they?) Still some players will want maximum $$$$, from would ever team.

lmaooo. he's an elite defenseman by every count. look at the underlying number. heck for a shitty d-man, he had 16 points in 26 games while playing on a bottom 5 team in the league. just check out the latest nhlpa poll they took in january of this year, and you'll see how the fans and media have no idea who weber is. players and management respect him, and view him as an elite world class d-man.

lemme challenge u on this. send me 1 vid of shea weber getting beat 1v1 in a habs jersey. any team in this league would love to acquire him. pretty sure an oilers team with mcdavid would as well. considering how amazing ur d-core is laugh
and r u suggesting that an analytics website is better then a players opinion who plays the game in the current day nhl?

Fair points. I checked into Crosby and he had an $8.7 MIL cap hit in 2008-09 when the salary cap was $56.7 so he actually took 15.3%. So you are more right than you thought....

The EDM trade is actually bad because I thought I had a 1st Round Pick there but without a 'Preview' option before publishing I didn't notice.

I do disagree with you regarding the Weber trade though. Weber is a top pair defenceman no doubt. When Montreal is ready to contend Weber will be 5 years older and possibly more brittle. Leafs are getting close to contend in a year or so. Montreal get 6 years younger, gain 2 1st picks to help with the rebuild.

It hurts as a Leaf fan to do the trade as well. Zaitsev is a fluid skater, has offensive upside and plays physical as a RHD. He has stumbled a bit this year but is on a long contract making 2nd pairing money. Losing 2 1st round picks is rough for the Leafs as well.

It might be better to leave Weber in Montreal and Zaitsev and draft picks in Toronto

wow. so in ur opinion numbers are more accurate then what a player says, who actually plays the game. wow. just wow. numbers really help eh. just ask the coyotes or even florida how good analytics are. we need analytics yes, but the eye-test is what really helps.

Dont see why Edmonton would consider that

What I was thinking was that Peter Chiarelli has already signed Sekera $5.5 MIL 4 years, Klefbom $4.17 MIL 6 years and Russel $4.0 MIL 4 years for LHD. Add Larsson @ $4.2 for 4 years and with Nuge, Lucic, Draisaitl and Kassian arguably being overpaid I was thinking that Connor Brown as a $2.1 MIL RH RW complete hockey player could help with skill and financial relief. Adding Borgman as a rugged, smooth skating LHD with some offensive upside on a ELC could also allow Peter Chiarelli to trade one of the current LHD for cap relief.

I did forget to add a 1st pick and without a 'Preview' option before publishing caused me to miss that.

Nurse is obviously better than Borgman but with Borgman's rugged play, almost throwing 3 hits a game on average compared, and Borgman's offensive flair, smooth skating and a hard shot I would be content on saving the assets and using Borgman for now.

Peter Chiarelli having $18 + MIL tied up in 4 LHD next year with how shaky they play is sad for me as a closet EDM fan for the last 35 years.

I hear what you are saying...although I think giving it more negative stars the the US National debt is too extreme. wink

There is certainly Cap space for Matthews and Marner if we are using annual Cup favourite Tampa Bay as the template and not sucky run teams like Buffalo and Edmonton. Marner can't hold a candle to Kucherov who recently signed a $4.8 MIL bridge deal in Tampa Bay. Tavares isn't as good as Stamkos who signed an $8.5 MIL long term deal as a UFA.

Look at MacKinnon, 6'3" Sheifele and 6'3" Monahan all signed long term to a little over $6 MIL each. Can NHL hockey fans here say that Matthews is significantly better than them....with a straight face?? I am a passionate Leafs fan and I haven't been this excited since the 70s as a kid but I find Leaf fans are extreme in their opinions of our players...how good a player is and how bad a player is.

The Leafs have a good core of young forwards and a decent goalie with okay defencemen but they haven't won anything yet. They aren't the best team on paper. They aren't even the best team on the ice. We are at best 6th. I don't understand why some fans here are so crazy with the amounts they suggest these unproven players should be given coming off their ELCs.

As for 1C, 2C and 3C you can arrange it how you like:

    Marleau / Tavares / Kapanen
    Hyman / Matthews / Nylander
    Johnsson / Kadri / Marner
    Martin / Komarov / Leivo
    ...I don't care.

The issue is the depth down the center which would be a luxury that the Leafs can't afford Cap-wise if the players and management don't sign Tampa Bay style contracts. Simple as that.
