To have 2 of the top 5 D in the world put together, it's a fair price. Eugene Melnyk made it clear of what he wants. I just gave it to him. Plus Karlsson is arguably the best D in the world, I'd make that trade; the only thing I would try more is to convince Eugene to retain some of Bobby Ryan's salary.

We'd have 2 of the top 5 for the rest of this one and change. Then Karlsson leaves in FA. We lose our best three zone center, a solid 2-4 winger, and our 1st. I'd rather not.

That was before Martin was injured again and before he was waived if I recall correctly. I'm not on this site to check time stamps, you can go nuts if you want to bring that up some more. Also TOR needed (and still does) defense. Not to mention JVR is likely gone in the offseason. So while the value isn't even one for one, JVR is gone and you get a solid veteran defenseman at a decent hit.

Also, I didn't word that correctly regarding the 'one and change'. He's pretty much a long term rental since I can't imagine the Sharks would resign or that he'd want to resign with them at the end of next season.

Melker Karlsson is actually a decent winger who can play 2nd, 3rd, or 4th line roles.
