If Melnyk actually had money to invest on the team, it would not be difficult to retool this team into a contender. There is some good pieces in the core and young talent in the pipeline.

It's actually a pretty good lineup. Bit young on defense, but Holtby might be enough to steer it to the playoffs, and Thornton adequately replaces Brassard for a year. Could probably sign Stastny for longer and get more stability.

Also, I think if that's the best offer for Holtby, the Caps keep him and trade Grubauer for that much.
