Description
TOR moves on from Marner, adding a top tier goalie and cap space in the process.

UTA has an abundance of youth, prospects and picks. They can afford to give up one high pick, in order to add a big name star player to be the face of the franchise in a new market.

NSH moves into the top 5-6 of the draft, like they tried to do last year. Poile gets his future #1 center at 6OA in Catton. They move up again, grabbing whichever RD prospect falls
(Yakemchuk, Parekh, Jiricek). PHI's prospect pool has some high end prospects, but isn't the deepest, so they opt for multiple lottery tickets.

With NSH finally having a #1 center and a 1st pair RD prospect to go with their future #1 goalie and the rest of their prospect depth, they'll have the pieces they need for a real rebuild here.

I don't think that this works because Utah's new ownership, having just spent $1.2 billion to acquire the franchise, will want Toronto to pay Marner's $7.25 million signing bonus, so there won't be any 2024 draft picks in that deal. That rules out the second trade, so I think that this whole scheme collapses. But let's assume that "in for a penny, in for a pound" applies. In that case, that seems like a lot for the Preds to add on top of Saros, but you're an esteemed Nashville authority, so I'll assume that Saros, Tomasino and a second and a third is worth Vejmelka and a first and a third to you all.

I don't know that $7.25M is a deal breaking amount, when you're investing over a billion dollars. Feels more like a rounding error comparatively, but who's to say? It's a bit out of my tax bracket, so I'm hardly an expert in that regard.

I do feel NSH is giving up more than necessary here. I was trying to mindful about not being too biased in NSH's favour, so I was purposely over generous. Assuming NSH is okay with trading Saros, and taking a step back for a year or two, nothing else they're giving up here is irreplaceable.

If you’re going to get a top 6 pick in the draft for our player id rather just trade him to Utah and get that pick than trade him to Nashville

Isn't TOR trying to compete right now though? Saros+ helps them more during their window than any prospect they'd draft at 6OA. And TOR isn't in a place where they can pull a rebuild/retool like NSH would be doing. They've made long term commitments to key players over the past couple years (Matthews, Nylander, Reilly) and they don't have much in the way of prospects or future draft picks to complement a 6OA pick.

One lone star prospect who'd be a couple years from being a meaningful contributor isn't a difference maker for where TOR's at right now, and not enough to base a future around.

you can get several NHL ready players at 6 this year. even if they draft a guy who isnt ready theyd clear up 11 million for free agency to get legit top pair D men
