Description
I think the habs should draft Iginla if the top 4 ends up being Celebrini, Demidov, Levshunov, Lindstrom.

These playoffs demonstrate once again the importance to have physical players who are GAMERS and winners... and the importance of depth.

Superstars are great - but they are so expensive that they make it hard to have a lot of depth.

Iginla is THAT guy. Just imagine him and Slaf in the playoffs. Just a heavy guy and fast player on each line.

Don't get me wrong - I like a LOT of other players in the draft - but I feel a guy like Iginla fits the culture and the type of team they are trying to build.

That future team will squeak in the playoff each year because they won't have that perenial 100-120 pts superstar.

But they will have six 60 to 65 pts+ players who play hard and defend well. That's the kind of team that can go on a tear during the playoff where hard physical and responsible play is rewarded.

With a future D core that will likely challenge the best in the league (if they hit) - the Habs will be very well balance for the years to come.

In 3years, I can see them adding a great UFA when Gally and Anderson's contracts are off the books - that's 12M$ in new cap space in 2027.

I don't like Iginla's skating, its an issue that the teams who drafts him needs to address as soon as they take him.

Don't get me wrong, I love the look of this lineup however hedging all your bets into this many unproven young guys is very risky. I personally do not see any of Mesar, Tuch, Kapanen, Konyushkov, Engstrom or Barron as part of the Habs future lineup. I also am very hesitant to say that Dach can remain healthy enough to be considered to be part of the Habs future lineup. I do love the Iginla pick though if the top 4 are the way you have laid out. I also really love the goaltending and other 5 D corps picks, I hope we can find another Xhekaj type of D man for the 3rd pairing to make this a really tough D to play against.

Yeah - but skating mechanics are definitaly something that can be coached and improved.

We'll have other prospect by then as well! Namely The WPG pick, the second round picks, the two 2025 first round picks, as well as the pick we will get for Barron, Harris, Matheson, Savard (so maybe two extra first round pick and a 2nd/3rd round pick) .

So, while I agreed that Mesar, Tuch, Kapanen, Konyushkov Engstrom or Barron are big question marks and that Harris and Barron are likely to be shipped out this year or the next, the potential trades and draft pick will 100% change the look of this team in the bottom six anyway.

Like - pretty sure we will get another top 15 picks next year that could end-up being another Caufield - this management has also done VERY well so far with later picks.

I don't think Dach is more injury prone that other... just terribly unlucky. What he showed last year was very encouraging and he had the best metrics offensively AND defensively of any forward on the team. And he is 23, so plenty of runway still!

This line-up is more a look in 2027:

Slaf - Suzuki - 2024 first round pick

Caufield - Dach - 2025 first round pick

X - Beck - X

X - X - X

while the D core will likely have Guhle, Hutson, Reinbacher and Xhekaj as the "core" .

In my personal opinion, this approach is too cautious like what Ottawa, Buffalo, Anaheim, Edmonton and Arizona have done for years. It's good to get fully loaded with prospects and have a deep pool but eventually you have to turn the corner and move into contention. Suzuki will be 25 heading into next season, Caufield, Dach, Newhook and Guhle will all be 22-24, we need them to start playing meaningful games down the stretch, if they make the playoffs its even better for their development as a team
