I'd like to have Barrie but I don't see any reason why the Avs do this. Girardi is a total downgrade from Barrie and he's older, and they could just keep Barrie and give him Girardi type money. They might be interested in Miller but that's about it. I do think that the Avs are one of the teams that could trade for Girardi though. Not this deal though

As an Avs fan, I'm not crazy about this deal, but I don't hate it either. There are some whispers that the Avs and Barrie's camp are struggling to come to a consensus on what his next contract should be, though it's early in negotiations. However, the Avalanche don't want this to turn into another O'Reilly situation. Personally, I think the Avalanche will be more willing to be flexible for Barrie. New York ate some salary and included a daft pick in this deal, the Avs might find it appealing.

The difference between O'Reilly and Barrie is that O'Reilly was one year away from UFA, and Barrie I believe will be 2 years after this season. So Avs do have leverage.
Speaking O'Reilly, though Buffalo gave a lot to acquire him and then went crazy by signing him to that obscene contract. Second line winger on non playoff team shouldn't get over 10% of a teams salary cap.
If I was trading for Barrie, I would be wary of his contracts requests (demands). What is he really worth, and unfortunately he sees his former teammate leverage RFA status to the max (good for him), but it can't continue for all RFAs.
Avs have no reason to tradearrie ....offer a fair contract and so can other teams, but likely won't given the compensation.
