I know it looks like a lot....but a 28th and 59th pick (estimate) aren't NHLers in the near future, 22 year old Pokka has not played an NHL game and 26 year old is an "old" LHD rookie. Leafs have three LHD prospects they are high on in the AHL. Hawks trading away so many draft choices (3 Cups later) has resulted in the Hawks may not having "immediate" that Leafs and other teams might really desire in a trade.

What are you hoping JVR will fetch? Not necessarily from the Hawks.

I would want a similar return that Ottawa gave for bobby ryan. They sent a 1st top 10, late first prospect and a decent roster player. It would be nice to get a top 10 pick and a good prospect preferrably in one of the following positions LW/C/RHD and a roster player to offset the money and fill the hole short term if needed. Also it would make sense to trade to a team that might not make the playoffs hense getting a top 15 pick.

In order to fetch that haul, you'll need to trade him to a playoff team @ the Deadline. Teams probably will give that for JVR, but not many and those picks won't be very high. TOR will be smart to either simply keep him or @ the TDL which won't yield lottery picks. You just get more at the deadline than offseason.

Look at the standings, it might be tough for many teams to make the TDL deals. this season. I know some people think you have to trade draft all upcoming UFAs, "cause you let them walk away for nothing." Well that is asinine and JVR is not a UFA till 2018. Would the Leafs be better to keep JVR and maybe it a position to make a playoffs or at least a playoff run this season. Maybe that experience is more important for the young guys one the team than the return for JVR. (I'm talking Leafs and JVR but it could be any team.) Percentage wise, and it's really close but the Leafs I believe are 10th in East.
Of course teams that make need JVR, may not want to give up any guys on their team currently cause they're in a playoff run too.
Trade for JVR. Let's say Dallas needs goal scoring, maybe two near NHL ready prospects.....Honda, Johns maybe a bit more
Ducks. Manson and Larsson. Even the Canes might want to give up prospects if it meant getting a better chance for the playoffs. NHL ready Dmen would be preferred by the Leafs, especially ones that play the right side. I know a lot of folks thinks the Leafs defence is terrible....I don't. GAA this year puts this 21st in the league. Kinda bottom of the mediocre.
