Draft day

Injuries were what hurt us the most…and departures of Severson and Graves. Goaltending issues were partly a byproduct of those.

I was thinking a series of cascading trades feeling in draft to add assets, then flipping later 1st for Necas. You are thinking three-way deal?

Couture is probably not worth much, even at 50% (which sharks cannot do).
But Couturier still has plenty to offer. He just needs out of Tortsville. And it’s not like Bruins are buying green bananas.

He just didn't have the production of debrincat, who was scoring at a 45 goal 82 point/82 game pace the previous 2 years. The goalscoring and point production gap cannot be explained by linemates alone
I have him at that star- tier.
Fiala, Trouba, Reinhart, Debrincat (to detroit)</div></div>
Step 1. NJD trade 10 to Vegas for 19/player
Step 2. NJD trade 19 to Calgary for 27/player
Step 3. NJD trade 27/Daws to Carolina for Necas

Necas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ljf</b></div><div>Don't exactly get how I'm ruining Meier if I'm keeping him on the right wing with the centerman he was playing like his normal self with towards the end of last season. I also, don't understand how the special teams are terrible, if the powerplay units may very well be the best in hockey if we had both the 1A and 1B like we tried to run at the beginning of the year last season, while the pk is about league average with decent upside banking on a Marino and Segey bounceback years. I can't trade back for Gust if the pick used for him is being used for Necas. Understand your fustration on Bast getting traded, but we did just overpay for Macdermid, so in making this I was kind of forced to get rid of one of the decently paid bottom 6 guys, and felt Bastian could be thrown in a Gustafson deal. Holding 3 goalies not only in case of injury, but mainly due to the fact that it has been reported several times that Schmido might infact want out due to lack of game time after a disappointing season. And finally, if using Clarke makes them a bit more soft, and you are truly losing sleep over it, we have another goon waiting in Utica, named Chase Stillman.</div></div>
(It’s a Ranger fan trolling as forever disappointed Devils fan…just ignore it)

If I set the expectations bar low, less likely I get disappointed.

Think Big
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Element23VM</b></div><div>As it stands, our best player is getting rocked every year, head hunted, challenged at the blue line. He can't carry it through the blue line all year because he never lasts 82 games, regardless of the circumstances of his injuries (he plays dangerously... if one hasn't happened, it's bound to happen). Anderson gets it deep. I don't care whether or not the Devils get Anderson, but they need to get a winger that takes the load off of Hughes to break the zone. Anderson, it just so happens, is big, mean, and skates like the wind. Playing with Hughes, he'd probably be a 50-60 pt player because all Hughes needs him to do is park out front and dig in the corners while he half-walls.
Anderson is an option, but this MUST be addressed in the offseason... we need Hughes for a full season, we need him protected.</div></div>
I agree on overall approach, just not that guy.
I think the solution is make a team responsibility. All 19 guys dressed should know by now, if Hughes is out, season is not going to go well.
Right now, Jesper Bratt is the only guy who night in and night out would stand up to bigger guys. And that’s the last thing we want. But we need that level of compete from everyone.
Grab a Bertuzzi, Barbashev, Domi, whomever…maybe a heavier dman. Can get there without sacrificing a ton of skill. I think adding Anderson would not make him a 50-60 pt player. It would just make Hughes less productive. Styles don’t mix. Hughes is east-west, possession player that is one of best transition players in league. Anderson is straight lines, north-south, dump-and-chase, dig it out of corners.

Nelson would be an interesting target. Or Anders Lee if they see something left.
(And they could offer Zacha, Boqvist, Walsh…Lou loves former Devils)

Horvat and JEE probably aren’t viable options. Giroux would probably be the cheapest, but has NMC. Schmaltz is probably the most likely if the group. Would guess player, prospect, pick combination.

I think the ideal scenario is something like (in any order)
1. Celebrini
2. Demidov
3. Levshunov
4. Silayev
5. Iginla
6. Parekh
7. Yakemchuk
8. Sennecke
9. Helenius
Then we have choice of Buium, Dickinson, Catton, Lindstrom, Eiserman.

Think Big
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Element23VM</b></div><div>On NJ's side, they don't need Harris whatsoever... but Anderson they'll certainly want (and then they'll glue him to Jack Hughes, whom, I think, he would have fantastic chemistry with), and at 5OA, well if they really like someone and they think he can be an elite player, I'm sure they'd look at it carefully. As it stands, I think they'd really like Helenius or MBN and they can get those guys at 10, probably.</div></div>
Anderson is a righty Miles Wood. No more, no less. Big, fast, goes in straight lines. He is where possession goes to die.
Devils could have interest in Anderson at $2.75m for fourth line…but there little chance he is playing with Hughes or Hischier. Especially when both Bratt and Meier prefer the right side….and Mercer has gotten comfortable there too.
Further, it’s just hard to stomach Anderson-to-NJ trades after all the nonsense from a couple of years ago (completely fabricated story from Tony Marinaro…that was later beat down as Devils never spoke to MTL about Anderson, as LeBrun and others have corrected).

Switch Schmid and Daws…and make it $3m retained.

Celebrini, Demidov, Levshunov, Buium, Catton, Dickinson, Eiserman, Lindstrom, Perekh likely the nine guys gone.
At that point, if not trading down, I guess we just take one of the wingers (Connelly, Iginla, MBN). But I would be tempted to grab Jiricek, Emery, Boisvert.
