Absolutely not. Thank him for his service, and move on. Ideally there'll be an Evangelista or a Kemell or whoever ready to step in for him a year from now.
I don't agree with cashing in on Nyquist now, when NSH doesn't appear to have an immediate successor to him. They can always move him during the season, if a young gun can steal his job. Or at the deadline, if the Preds are out of the playoffs. Even if he regresses to career average production, it'll be difficult to replace that at the same cap hit with a free agent signing (and any decent UFA signing will require a longer term contract too).
I wouldn't be completely opposed to seeing if Smith could bounce back in NSH - in theory. It's not an experiment really worth expending any assets for though. If he made much less than what he makes now, and was available on waivers, I'd give him a shot. He's not desirable otherwise. NSH could get Zucker back for another year, for less than what Smith makes.

Smith's more expensive, coming off a down season as opposed to a career best one, and NSH already knows Nyquist has chemistry on the top line. Even if Smith were 4-5 years younger, I still don't see the upside in it.

I'm open to a change of scenery trade for Tomasino, but I'd rather make a deal with NYR for Kakko instead.

If there's a better offer than this out there, sure. I'm still more than happy with this, though.
I was proposing Tomasino and a 2nd for Kakko, back in Nov, and NYR fans felt it wasn't enough then. So I'm just happy to see some of them come around on the idea, lol.
I think I saw a NYR fan offering Kakko for a 2nd and a 4th, the other day. I would prefer that over losing Tomasino.

I'm not sure why VAN is adding a pick, when CAR is dumping the much longer contract.
NSH declines. Morrow and 1st is much closer. Plus a sweetner, (a B prospect like Heimosalmi or a 3rd) if CAR wants to unload Andersen on NSH too.
Too much for Necas.

So, Mikael Granlund for Necas? :sarcasm
Fiala was coming off a better season than Necas has ever had, when LA traded for him - not a down year, and whining about his role. Let someone else overpay for him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>caniac06</b></div><div>Deepest position? You overrate the Preds. Even if Luke improves a lot and Nyquist somehow has another big year.</div></div>
Sure, banking on Nyquist repeating his career season isn't overly likely. If he has even a career average year, that's still a steal for his cap hit.
I did mean NSH's future at RW though. Evangelista is on the rise of course. Then there's Tomasino, Kemell, Wood (if he doesn't stay at center when he turns pro), Fink, etc.
It doesn't make sense to trade a top five goalie for a 2nd line RW, when NSH has multiple guys with the potential to be a 20-some goal scorer like Necas - if not more than that. Especially when NSH has bigger needs a Saros trade could address, and the in-house prospects have the benefit over Necas of still having cheap ELC years ahead of them.

If NSH decides to trade Saros despite everything they've said to the contrary, a 2nd line player at their deepest position isn't going to be the reason. And I'd rather have a $900k McCarron over a $2.4M Fast.

If that's the going price for a retained Markström, I'd retain on Saros, and get an even bigger haul of futures for him, instead of doing either of these trades.

i think you're massively overrating the value of your depth players. No one is going to give up a 2nd for the kind of roster filler pieces they can sign for free (at a smaller cap hit, in most cases) after Jul 1st.

Eric Duhatschek from The Athletic reviews some NJD goalie trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>His words, not mine.
There has been plenty of teams asking for Mercer, and it’s been well reported that Fitzy has given a blanket “no”. So it’s not a surprise he said that.
The 2024 1st is likely not an option (more because of timing than anything else). Casey plus 2025 1st is probably what should have been suggested here.</div></div>
If NJ gets to negotiate an extension with Saros as that proposal suggested, Casey and a 2025 1st feels light to me.

Interesting that Mercer and a 3rd is the non-starter for NJ, of the two Saros proposals. As a Preds fan, Casey and 10OA is the far more attractive package.

Askarov
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Is the difference between Schmid and Askarov a top-10 pick?</div></div>
Askarov was an 11OA pick four years ago, who has hasn't lost any value since he was drafted.
For NSH to trade him now that he's on the cusp of being NHL ready for essentially the same pick, they'd need a lot more incentive than a 3rd-4th string goalie.
