Pachal and Kylington weren't bad playing 2nd pair. in Calgary Do we want better defensemen for the 2nd pair? Sure but Lily isn't the answer.
Hanley got waived by the Stars not the Flames. He was actually surprisingly good defensively in Calgary, not just on the bottom pair either. Is he a long term solution? No probably not but he's better and cheaper than Lily. Then there are all the prospects who are NHL ready or close.
On top of all that, Lily is an arbitration eligible RFA with a 1.5 mil qualifying offer or roughly double what Hanley and all the prospects make. Hard pass on Lily, he has almost no value to Calgary.</div></div>
Lily played the 3rd most minutes per game of all torontos defense men. Kylignton and Pachal were our bottom pair not our 2nd. Lily averaged about half a point a game, pair him with a defensive guy and he should be fine.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MoxNix</b></div><div>Lily would be more like the 7th D with those two gone. With them still here he be on waivers after training camp or traded for a late pick before camp.
Kylington, Miromanov, Pachal and Hanley would all be ahead of Lily on the depth chart and it's very likely so would at least 2 of the prospects.</div></div>
I'm not a huge fan of the player but be realistic here. Kylignton was OK, got better towards the end of the season but we still don't know what we're getting. I like Miromanov, but his sample size is way to small to know what he going to be. Pachal is a bottom pairing d man who hits. Hanley got waived and couldn't even solidify a spot on our bottom 6 last season.

That's got to ɓe the worst Marner to the flames yet. If we're going for marner it is to make the playoffs, how are we going to do that with Liljgren as our #1D?

The flames aren't doing that, and your condition doesn't work, he has to score 20 points over 2 seasons but the pick is in a draft 1 season away?

That's what I've said about Iginla, if he goes in the top 8 then at least we're getting one of the top D men, then we ended up with Catton in this.

When the Oilers were trying to trade for Ullmark at the deadline every Boston fan said he said he won't go to Canada. Now you're all trying to trade him to Edmonton.

Can't see Buium falling out of the top 10, but I'm guessing Jersey goes with a forward. Agree with dgibb though, this pick could get moved.

Just because a players from Calgary doesn't mean we want them. I wish Avalanche, Jets and Lightning fans thought like that and would send us Makar, Morrissey and Point.

He's not going to come with an extension like everyone proposes, but if he's willing to waive his NMC you've gotta think he'd be willing to sign.

Because it will take an overpay to get him out of Calgary. Him and Slavkofsky have been really good together at the world championship.

The Athletic recommended Markstrom trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>Listen, I don't want to toot our own horn here but believe it or not, the collective CF opinion (minus the crazies of course) are far more realistic than some of the Athletic or other publications opinions when it comes to trade value. They aren't thinking values and projections like we do. Their jobs are in creating narratives and storylines. Not analyzing data for trades like many of us do. Julian is good at what he does but I wouldn't put much stock in his trade valuations. I get LAK needs a goalie and wants to go get a cup but you don't sacrifice literally one of the best prospects in the league to go get a 34 year old, sometimes elite, sometimes dog poopoo, caliber goalie.
Its crazy how many writers/podcasters are so eloquent with words and quite knowledgeable on hockey culture, NHL rules, hockey politics etc but are completely out to lunch on trade values. AND THATS OK. He doesn't spend hours upon hours like some of us do here on CF, refining trade value knowledge.</div></div>
The trade was proposed back in February, Markstrom had just stolen back to back games for the Flames then lost a goaltending duel 1-0 vs the rangers (score was 2-0 but one was a empty netter). At the same time the Kings were falling in the standings because of poor goaltending. A fan made up the trade in his Flames Mailbag segment, MacKenzie added 3 million in retention to it. Obviously the trade makes no sense today, but it was some what realistic when it was proposed.[/quote]

To be fair to Julian McKenzie, he didn't propose the trade, he just commented on it. And it was back in February when Markstrom was still playing extremely well.
