Questions for Caniacs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>I know that the Hawks have a surplus of LHD, which isn’t something the Canes need, and with the Hawks pieces of interest basically being limited to Bedard, Murphy, and 2OA, I personally don’t see a trade to be made. I will say, a line of X-Bedard-Necas would be absolutely electric, and I think that would basically be the only reason Chicago would consider making a move for Necas.
As for pick value, taking into account the difference in draft quality, the only comparable picks in this years draft are likely in the top 7-8 picks in terms of potential.
As for KK, I think the Canes give him until the U26 buyout window closes to control his destiny. If he is able to carve out his role as the 2/3C, the Canes keep him. I’m of the opinion that the KK we saw at the end of last season and the beginning of this season was the true KK, and if that is the case, his contract is a very good contract. As for would he would get via trade right now, I have no clue.</div></div>
Yeah. His contract could definitely look like a bargain if he can consistently play like that.

Questions for Caniacs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>exo2769</b></div><div>100% and I think we're saying the same thing, but IF a team like CHI or ANA or whomever got him now...it would be the same exact approach that CAR would be implementing. They'd be looking to see how its working out and if not...buy him out before 26 too! So CAR shouldn't retain because they no longer control their "cap destiny" and they're giving the potential upside to someone else.</div></div>
Even so, if the acquiring team maybe made a handshake deal to not buyout his deal until the 2026 buyout period, if they decide to do so, and that still would knock two years off the buyout penalty for CAR, and again the cap hit would be far less than buying him out now. I think if they retained the exact amount of the buyout and the acquiring team bought him out in the summer of 2026, the term would be cut down by two years and the amount against the cap would only be like $270k for CAR, which is pretty negligible. BUT that would leave them with a retention slot tied up for a long time. So that is probably the bigger consideration than the cap hit itself, IMO. But both are valid concerns. I also think that with retention, his contract might be less likely to be bought out in the first place. The cap hit becomes a more manageable risk, whether that means burying him on the 4th line, as a 13 forward, or in the AHL. Because neither team wants to deal with the potential term on the buyout penalty.

CHI would want a more clearly defined pick for taking Atkinson. ANA is overdue to take a jump in the standings. The CBJ 2nd round pick might do the trick.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>exo2769</b></div><div>Retention wouldn't make sense for KK because that's just as bad as the buyout...then the other team could buy him out. As an outsider looking in on their situation. They ride with him a year or two more until the buyout jumps up. That's the make or break decision to be made.</div></div>
Retention makes sense for KK only because they would be cutting term on the buyout penalty in half. But yeah, if the other team ends up buying out his deal, CAR would get stuck with a buyout penalty anyway, but the amount against the cap would be far less. I think they definitely want to make that decision BEFORE he turns 26, though.

Questions for Caniacs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>With the buyout penalty being as cheap as it is, if no team is willing to pay for KK, which it sounds like there is a couple of teams willing, the Canes will just buy him out. No point in spending assets to move KK when the buyout is only about 800k.
As for Necas, Chicago doesn’t have much to offer that the Canes would be interested in. Canes aren’t interested in a futures type of deal for Necas, and there are only 2 roster players the Canes would likely want, 1 of which Chicago would consider untouchable. I get Chicago doesn’t want to move Murphy, but since Bedard isn’t getting moved, he is likely the only other roster player the Canes would want.
I don’t see Chicago being open to moving 2OA, but maybe a deal can be reached for 2OA and a prospect for Necas and 27OA, but that is almost certainly not going to happen with how great a difference between 2 and 27 there is.
Personally, I don’t think Chicago and Carolina are good trading partners for Necas. Just too much conflicting interests for a trade to be made.</div></div>
Yeah. There are a lot of reasons that paying to move KK makes no sense, specifically the U26 buyout cost. I honestly don't think CHI and CAR are good partners, either. I'm not really asking as a CHI fan and not necessarily with CHI as the acquiring team, but mainly just looking for generalized answers out of curiosity as a fan of the NHL.
No offense meant, because I don't know how to say this without sounding mean, but I personally think your expectation for a return on Necas is bonkers. CAR would have to add a mountain of value on top of Necas to even come close to getting Bedard or our 2nd overall pick. haha. But, I know, I asked and you answered. So, I appreciate you taking the time.
Regardless, if you had to put a single pick value on Necas, doesn't have to be one that CHI owns, what would it be? 15th overall? 10th overall? 5th overall?
Also, generally, what do you want and/or what do you think you could get for KK, with and without retention? Again, not specifically with CHI in mind, but in general.

I honestly don't think CHI is interested in reclamation projects right now. But it is certainly possible some team out there would take a flyer on Wahlstrom for a 4th.

Because of that and the fact that his buyout is relatively cheap, I don't think they're going to pay a team to get rid of him.</div></div>
Makes sense. There were a lot of posts while they were still in the playoffs and right after they got knocked out where people were calling for his contract to be dumped or bought out. But I think it was reactionary and most Caniac's have calmed down since then. Was just wondering if y'all were still feeling that way about him and his contract. I guess the fans opinions don't really matter, anyway, when it comes down to it. Teams are a business and have to be more level headed than fans generally are.

Everyone spends time in AHL
I love the premise. I think time in the AHL would be good for all of them. And using our NHL roster space for short term cap dumps helps us add more draft capital. Also, these cap dumps being seasoned veterans who are at least serviceable, likely makes us more competitive in the short term, if that actually is the goal for next season.

It is highly unlikely DET gets away without sending their 1st if they want to dump Copp. Fabbri will be expensive too. Much more expensive than that. Walman is of very little value to CHI. Petry might be easier with only one season being left on his deal and being a fairly serviceable player.

I generally just go straight to the CHI trades and skip everything else until I see the comments section and I'm like "wait a second" and then scroll back up and look at the rest. Especially when it is a user I don't recognize. But holy cow is that an awful trade. lol

Tavares marner waive

Second not saying giving u cap is good but u have more then enough space to take him and we’re paying u a third to take it and it doesn’t affect u at all there’s no downside to them taking this deal at all and u get a third for FREE. Why don’t u take this deal? A third to take cap space that u aren’t even using. Ur acting like ur a competing team</div></div>
Before I even begin to formulate a response, What are you even talking about? Like, What exactly are you referring to? Because I was responding to the other guy.
If you are talking about giving a 3rd round pick for $11M in cap space, a 3rd doesn't even come close to paying for that kind of cap relief or the salary he is owed. I'm not sure how that isn't clear to you. Rebuilding teams set themselves up to have cap space for this very reason. A 3rd round pick is a crap shoot. That doesn't pay for $11m in cap relief and $8m in total salary owed. If you think it does, you are nuts.

If you think having cap space means we are giving up anything for him, you are very sorely mistaken. Having cap space means we are one of VERY FEW teams who CAN take his contract but very little need for one year of an aging overpaid underperforming player. Without retention and/or a VERY favorable extension, JT is a negative asset. No one is paying to help TOR with their cap issues. TOR will have to pay to move him, if he is even willing to waive in the first place. Get used to the idea of him not waiving and then walking away next summer or taking a team friendly deal to retire in TOR.
