Yeah idk. my example would be the Capitals trying to move Lap and Iorio or Alexeyev. or even Protas. teams tend to overlook whats infront of them ... American saying? grass is greener?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kalopsia</b></div><div>Lapierre's a year younger, plays the more valuable position as a center, and doesn't have an extensive injury history. I'd peg his value around a late 2nd, and I think it's highly unlikely he reaches the ceiling we all imagined when the Caps drafted him.
I think in general hockey fans underestimate how early players peak and assume there's more upside left than there really is. Analytics folks peg the peak for forwards at roughly 22-24 and for defensemen at around 25-27 (<a href="https://hockey-graphs.com/2017/03/23/a-new-look-at-aging-curves-for-nhl-skaters-part-1/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">source 1</a>, <a href="https://hockeyviz.com/txt/age22" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">source 2</a>). Late bloomers do happen and it's possible Robertson and Liljegren could improve, but data suggests this year is likely the best they'll get. And yes, I also think Caps fans need to temper their expectations for Lapierre, McMichael, and Protas. Lapi should still be expected to improve next year but chances are, they are what they are at this point.
Also... don't pull that "you must not watch them" crap. Are you seriously trying to tell me you watched enough neutral hockey, and watched it closely enough, to thoroughly evaluate a player who's gotten 11 minutes a night across 87 career games on a team in another division? C'mon man, none of us are NHL scouts here.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>All_Knowing</b></div><div>While I agree more with Kalopsia regarding both players (especially Robertson - I have never been a fan of him, mostly due to his injury history at such a young age), my question was genuine and not leading - why is TOR trading these players?
Assuming they are both worth a 2nd each (not questioning that in this post), they must not be terrible. Both are RFAs and should get somewhat "cheap" contracts. They are still young. Sounds like key players for a contending team that a) are always strapped for cash and b) need youth to go along with their core veterans (like every contending team). Why does every TOR post on here have both players traded?</div></div>
I've watched about 25 Leaf games this year. Mainly bc i was intrigued by Liljegren and what they would do with him this year. Him and Sandin are very close and wondered if them playing together would help improve Sandins game. Also was waiting to see if Niemelä would get any games this year. Liljegren defensive impact was more noticeable this year. Ideally in a perfect world Capitals would have Carlson Spence and Liljegren on the RS. trading the 17oa pick for Spence. I also watched a lot of Kings games. Spence is fantastic. Much better than Clarke who teams have rated as a top prospect.
Robert has an elite shot and play bigger than his size. What do the Capitals need? shooters? scorers? yeah im taking a risk on the kid that has an elite release. Rarely do NHL overlook talent but in this scenario i believe Leafs arent utilizing their talent. Happened with Petterson with the Ducks. Marchessault on the Panthers. Nichushkin in dallas. Capitals have a coach that specializes in developing youth. Stephenson is a prime example of a franchise overlooking talent. so yeah it doesn happen. Even Leason on the ducks has overachieved in a limited role
My guess is that TML feel they need a more established middle 6 forwards. Similar to the Hawks when the let Strome go for free.
dont gotta be a scout to know when a player has a bunch of potential. Tolvanen is another GREAT example. AND DURZI

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kalopsia</b></div><div>Thinking you can flip your prospects for good picks after you've realized they'll never live up to expectations is a time-honored tradition amongst hockey fans. What I don't get is why fans of other teams seem to go along with it for these two. You've got an undersized, injury-prone winger who provides nothing outside the offensive zone and only produces when heavily sheltered, and an offensive defenseman who at 25 still hasn't topped 23 points in a season, doesn't really drive offensive even when sheltered. Both of them had their ice time cut in the playoffs. I don't get the interest in these two, I feel like it's all just leftover hype from when Leafs fans were really high on these guys.</div></div>
So what you are saying is you think Lapierre is worth less than a 2nd? Roberson had a better season than him. I guess he will never "never live up to expectations" huh? its almost like some players develop slower? huh? Liljegren has solid defensive numbers also. you sound like a person who hasnt watch either play. Both are risk / reward but name the last 2nd round pick Capitals drafted that has amounted to anything on their current roster? MF?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kalopsia</b></div><div>Why are we dumping Milano in order to replace him with Roberston on the second line? I don't understand why he's valued so highly on this site. What exactly does he provide that Milano doesn't, besides being related to Jason Robertson? He seems like the classic example of a guy who's got the skill to tear up the AHL, but he's not skilled enough to play a top 6 role and too small and fragile to play a bottom 6 role.
Also, the Caps have already used all three of their retention slots, and the retention on Edmundson and Mantha doesn't technically end until July 1st... that is, after the 2024 draft. Any Caps trade featuring retention can't include 2024 draft picks.</div></div>
Robertson can score and is really high end. Give a great effort consistently . i have a lot of faith in the HC that hes able to get the most out of all his players. Roberson given the right situation should score 25-30 goals a year

He is having a good playoffs but he had a slight better than average regular season.
3rd round will have some good players, I see Nabokov going in the second personally. The talent is too high to leave him on the board that far into the draft.
Ovi is getting old yes, but he did not look bad during the regular season. Maybe he has lost a step but he is still playing hard. We do not have a good enough LW ready to take his spot on the top line and he will stay there because the organization owes him everything</div></div>
Philips isnt fast and plays a more skilled / soft game.
Literally 5-10 people know hes even draft available this year. Teams likely dont touch him till 3rd/4th rounf due to the talent in the 2nd round alone.
Ovechkin played 30-40 good games this year? thats pretty horrible.
