Necas
I can't imagine the Canes trade (in this case) 6 years of Necas for 1 year of Buchnevich, let alone throw in the better defensive prospect.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Marcsnack</b></div><div>What are those "obvious reasons"?</div></div>
Probably not the reason the poster you're replying to is thinking, but the Canes save more against the cap by buying out Kotkaniemi than if they retain this much on him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>The_Rocket</b></div><div>maybe but i dont think that contract gets moved without either adding sweetners to it or taking salary back.
this reduces the commitment from 6 years to 2 years for carolina. its pretty obvious kotkaniemi is on the outside right now</div></div>
Then they buy him out with a cap penalty of 835k/year. The cap commitment for 6 or 2 years won't matter, the biggest cap crunch is this coming offseason - if they can get through it with KK on the roster (which I believe is the goal but may not ultimately be possible), then they would prefer to have him. As you pointed out above he is younger and a center, he still has a lot of time to turn it around.
To that end, he's still 23 so the 1/3 buyout is available next offseason as well. I could see a team taking him on with a late pick and trying to get him to work, to then buy him out next offseason for even less against the cap - again, only if the Canes are unable to keep everyone they want this summer.

Trading mitch for rod
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MacanBayangan</b></div><div>yeah I like the trade for both parties and understand Rod is unlikely (although would be great from our perspective). Do you think there's a chance he won't be extended if you get swept by the rangers?</div></div>
I am doubtful that they get swept by the Rangers, but even then, an extension has reportedly been in place since the summer. Rod wait's to sign until all of the assistants are signed, and Dundon is in the business of making money - he's not going to can the coach who has made 6 straight playoffs after the team missed for a decade.
Rod is also pretty vocal about staying in Raleigh. I have my doubts that he would coach anywhere else even if he was fired.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mattyag9</b></div><div>What do you think would be a fair price?</div></div>
Based on previous winger comps, a late first and a good prospect. The thing is the Canes shouldn't move him for fair value. In this ACGM you've given him a 5x6.25 contract, and if that's what he signs Carolina will likely keep him. He fills a role (top 6 winger) and the Canes as a competing team need those more than picks/prospects. In the offseason the Canes biggest needs will be winger and RD, so if there were a comparable young and/or cost controlled player coming back they might move Necas.
I think it is more likely Necas is packaged with a pick for an upgrade than he is sold for pieces.

What if the Sens didnt miss in those 2 years
If picking the best player available in the draft were easy I'd be an NHL GM... They could have taken Hayton or Zadina in 2018, or Kaliyev instead of Pinto in 2019... or Faber instead of Kleven in 2020 and McAvoy instead of Logan Brown in 2016. Most of the time, It's a crapshoot.

Can you explain the thought process of why they wouldn't let those other players walk and keep Necas? Like, if they are keeping the other players and trading Necas, surely that means the other players are better. They are UFAs this year, so why not just sign them to the Habs? And if you want to trade for Necas because he is better, why would the Canes trade him in the first place?

Habs
I've said my piece on Necas trades but at the risk of sounding like a broken record, what incentive is there for Carolina to make that trade? I'm sure that value wise, looking at comps, it's a fair trade - probably even an overpay. Why would Carolina take a fair trade value on Necas? A late first in a weak draft, an early/mid first in a stronger draft a year later, a 3rd pairing defenseman, and a player who won't crack the roster for 2+ years don't really help a team that is competing right now. What does help said team is a dynamic top6 forward, and that's what Necas is.
If Necas's next contract demands are outrageous or he wants to leave then the value will be significantly less than this, but for right now, operating on the assumption the Canes want to re-sign him, this trade does not interest the Canes.

The most important on the list are Jarvis Necas and Guentzel. I'm not sure why Carolina would sign DeAngelo, Skjei, or Martinook before having the money for Necas. I could see the argument for Teravainen or Pesce, but at that point they have enough money to keep Necas anyway.

Minnesota and Pittsburgh decline. I would think Tampa declines because they don't have cap space but maybe they find a way to work it out.
In terms of UFA signings I would think Chatfield and Noesen get more, and hard pass on Sprong.

PLD Kakko Necas and UFAs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rb1481</b></div><div>So which is it? An overpay, or the picks/players arent what they would want? You can’t say both, you contradict your own statement</div></div>
It's an overpay, Montreal should not offer this much in a package for any one player that isn't a superstar. If offered this package, I still think the Canes decline because it's not what they would be looking for in a return for Necas. Those are not contradictory statements, they are complimentary. Teams don't trade players in a vacuum, and in Carolina's case they are contending and don't want to sell their players for futures.
If a team offered their next four firsts for Cole Caufield, far more than he is worth, Kent Hughes would probably decline because they are trying to exit their rebuild and futures would set them back.
