The Sharks aren't just trading Karlsson to free up cap space, they're trading him because the timelines don't match up (he's good and the Sharks are bad and by the time the Sharks are competitive he'll be at the very end of his career). Rather than have a great player doing nothing for the org (other than giving the fans something fun to watch and making them draft later) they want assets that match up with their timeline (picks/prospects).

Yeah, I agree this deal makes zero sense for SJS. Basically, letting EK65 go for nothing when the salary cap isn't an issue for the Sharks this season.
