Leafs 2024 2025 Offseason Discussion Part 1: Kill or Be Killed
Swayman just let in a goal for Boston (GWG with <2 min. left) that was probably just as bad if not worse than any Samsonov let in.
I don't think he will be traded for, but It likely cost him big bucks.
Anyways - every game in 6 the game series had Florida having more PP's than the Bruin. 28 PP's to 16 overall (that's average 2 PP's per game.
I am a bit surprised there is not more talk of the new Leafs coach. I suspect its fear of getting our hopes up.

Why could Leafs not get the reffing that Florida is getting.
Every game, more penalties to Boston. Overall, it's 9 PP's for Boston. 19 PP's for Florida. (about halfway through 3rd in game 4).
Edit - it's now 20 PPs for Florida.
Edit 2: 21 (that one was deserved).

I think Leafs management were surprised that Keefe took full responsibility for the losses.
So they all sort of took responsibility upon themselves, knowing that they were not going to be held to account. (at least not this year).
I think they are setting themselves up for a firing next years.

Just for fun I looked at some stats.
Regular Season - Average 3.11 goals scored. By playoff teams average is 3.34 goals.
Playoffs. Average goals scored is 2.93.
So a drop of 0.41. (and a drop is expected because you can't pad your statistics playing San Jose).
Teams that dropped more than twice this number.
WAS down 0.93.
LVK down 0.97.
VAN down 1.24
NAS down 1.28
DAL down 1.35
TOR down 1.98.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>After remembering who Marner's agent is (Darren Ferris) yea hes not getting traded
Darren Ferris has a habit of walking his clients right into free agency if the money is not right
Friedman even mentioned it
This may very well end up being a he stays here wracks up the points then either extends or walks for nothing
Now could the mold break and he move before absolutely but his agent and NMC are 2 big roadblocks rn</div></div>
I remember ~20 years ago when Sundin had a NTC and Leafs wanted to rebuild. He wouldn't waive - and he "helped" the to 2 consecutive years of missing playoffs by a couple of points.
They should have told Sundin if he doesn't waive, they will play him 3rd line or take away any competent pieces on the roster so it's obvious he would never make the playoffs here.
Same way, If you want to rebuilt, you can just put nobody linemates with Marner and he won't rack up the points. That's incentive to waive the NTC.
If you want to win, you can't do that.
My early prediction is that he re-signs for the same $11.5M that Nylander got.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rajvinder</b></div><div>I know people here doubt "insider takes" so feel free.to ignore if you want.
Been chatting with a few friends who work for the Leafs/MLSE.
From what I'm hearing they are considering four options:
1. Leave Shanny in charge and give him 2 seasons to see out his vision. They wouldn't let him trade any prospects of picks from the 2027 draft (or later). Idea is that he can run it back do whatever he feels will work and in 2 years if it's failing Matthews/Nylander/Marner are still young enough that their contracts can be moved and the team can tear it down.
2. Fire Shanny and leave Tre with the GM title but he and Pelley will split the President's job. Direction here would largely be a retool, moving out a few guys and try to win.
3. Blow it all up. There have been discussions about just a complete blow up including trading Matthews/Marner/Nylander/Rielly/Tavares. There are some people concerned that after Shanahan put his "team" in place he prioritized the people over the organization and that culture can't be changed without them all gone. This would essentially be what happened when Shanahan first came, wipe out the front office and start again.
4. Observation year. Pelley has only been on the job for 1.5 months. There is a thought that he might just let everything stay the same. Observe for a year then make decisions next year. This would mean no major moves without his approval, no big contracts, etc. but team stays the course for the most part unless he approves a big trade/UFA deal.
Seems like it's really all up in the air.</div></div>
I think #4 - but throw fans a bone and change coach, OR #1. both are sort of kick the can down the road, as with #1 is Leafs do very well next year they might keep everything together, and if they do everythign poorly, the firings are accelerated 1 year.
I almost voted for #3 last year when all big 3 could still be moved. However someone mentioned MLSE and how bad all their other teams (TFC, Raptors) are doing so they need at least 1 playoff team to keep fans happy - so not happening now.

Larry Murphy might be a better analogy. But he was traded for future considerations and I don't even know who it turned into.
Murphy was brought into Toronto as a 16 to 18 minute offensive defenceman. I forget if it was injury or trades, but he, as an aging defenceman, was asked to log 22+ minutes and as shut-down guy and fans got on him as he was too old to fit that role.
Traded to Detroit, he anchored their PP to 2 cups in 3 years.

Another minor problem here is Kampf. He was Keefes guy - but making $2.4M for the next 3 years.
It's only about a $0.5M overpay, but it does take up a spot that could have been filled by a sub $1M junior/Marlie. Especially a problem for 25/26 season.
Reaves is not a huge problem as I think he is only a $250k cap hit if buried in the minors.

I think the Leafs brass (Shanahan or higher) decided to re-sign the big 3. Essentially knowing they would give us 5 to 8 good years - become the top 3 Leaf scorers in history, and make the playoffs.
They were not willing to take the risk dumping one and taking a step backwards - in order to have a better Cup chance.

2 years ago elimination game interference called on potential GWG by Tavares.
Last year elimination game clear holding the stick penalty/interference not called on game winning goal.

When Blue Jays won the World Series they had Jack Morris, with ERA of 5 - with most wins on team. Juan Guzman and Jimmy Key had ERA 3 and were well back in wins.
I hated it at the time - Morris was a fake. But somehow the team played better with him on the mound and it was real - he was the starter that gave them the best chance to win.

Yup. Note that Game 3 was a bigger win for Leafs than game 2 - providing PK and PP would have held their own.
So a series tied 2-2 would we just with functioning special teams.
Any other factor (better in net, no Matthews//Nylander injuries would likely have Leafs ahead 3-1.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>I would be more concerned with a 1/14 PP then Sammy lul
Or a 50% PK
Special teams and this teams inability to create offense is what's killing them not the goalie
TBL series last year be the example
Game 2 7-2
Game 3 4-3
Game 4 5-4
Game 6 2-1
PK 73% PP 25%
So far this series TOR goals
GM 1: 1
GM 2: 3 (Ullmark)
GM 3: 2
GM 4: 1
PK 53% PP 7%
Noticing the problem vs last year lul</div></div>
I am using a 25% PP and 75% PK as average. With this, the score in the 4 games would have been.
Bos -- Tor
4.3 to 1.8
1.5 to 2.8
1.8 to 3.3 (there would not have been a BOS EN goal since the Leafs should have been ahead.
2.8 to 1.8
So really, Sammy has probably cost the Leafs 2 to 3 goals. Special Teams have cost the Leafs about 6 goals.

The last time we lost to Boston in 7, we had a 3-2 series lead and we're down a goal in the 3rd period of game 6 and he played Matthews something like 3 minutes in the 3rd while playing Marleau 11 minutes. Babcock was a bad coach who cost the team and Keefe is no better. He played Sammy these playoffs, there are some (me probably more than any on here) who absolutely knew he was going to have bad games cost us. (Game 1 and 3 are as much on him as anyone else). He never adjusts anything, he gets out coached all the time. It's just dumb, Keefe has to go.</div></div>
Just putting this out - Sammy has better Save % than Saros, Bobrovsky, Hellebuyck, Georgiev.
Sammy could have been better - maybe the series would be 2-2. But the flaws in this team are still there.

And they’ve been pretty good (a few dumb penalties). It’s the core not being able to score that’s the problem. There is no justification for not trading Marner and maybe Tavares (although no one is taking John Tavares, even for free, so that’s why it’s probably better just to ride out the last year of his contract).
PS: as much as it needs to happen that we trade Marner, I’m fully expecting them to resign him. This is the same crap we’ve seen year in and year out. I’m so sick of it.</div></div>
Leafs had the decision to make a year ago.
1) Dump the core 3 or 4 and rebuild, or
2) Re-sign the core 3, almost guarantee they will be the 3 highest scorers in Leafs history, and accept that there will be little to no playoff success.
Now all have No Trade Clauses. The decision was made - now we live with it. Enjoy the regular season - after all, it's longer than the playoffs.

I was thinking with McDavid injury, door opened for Matthews to get Hart nomination. For it to happen, he needs to win goal scoring title by 20% over competition - just as MacKinnon and Kuch are about 15% to 20% ahead of the pack.
So in this game, very big step backwards.
