I'd say go get one of those two UFA dmen long term this offseason. Yes you're getting better now, but once any high picks from this year, Thompson, Muk, Havelid, etc. are ready to make the jump, you have a bit of a logjam there.

Dont roast me too badly
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WillyMackyWilly</b></div><div>Well, to be fair I did have a long-term extension with Marner in mind for the sharks. I also believe he's getting undervalued due to his playoff struggles, this is a consistent 90+ point guy that changes the offensive outlook of any team he goes to. Playoff performer or not aside, no matter who wants to trade for marner you can't get away with some mediocre package. Especially with how horrid my sharks were this year, you're gonna have to cough up a little extra to get these quality assets. Just my outlook, you say "long term pieces." I say "1 possible long term piece and the rest will inevitably be moved anyways".. why not now?</div></div>
Right but the playoff underperforming, huge cap hit, full no-move clause and 1 year of term left before hitting UFA is what is dragging down his value. Given an extension comes secured it does raise the value some, but I wouldn't call that a given. Had the Leafs wanted to trade him 3 years ago, this would be a whole different conversation. I don't disagree that he's very talented - he is and would cost some pieces but the value the Sharks are giving up here is pretty over the top. Also I don't understand the rationale behind pieces that will "inevitably" be moved.
Addison and Wiesblatt have little value.
Granlund you can get a 2nd out of this upcoming deadline probably
Ferraro a late 1st
Halttunen is a decent 2nd round prospect.
And then another 2 high 2nd rounders in the next 2 drafts.
Granlund is the only player there who's most likely getting moved. Everyone else is a prospect or pick the Sharks should hold onto and Ferraro will only be traded for the right price.

this is incredibly tilted in the leafs favor
even if marner for a year was worth 14th overall (he's not), we'd basically be trading granlund, ferraro, halttunen, addison, wiesblatt, two 2nds and a 4th for Niemela...

Sharks would be lucky to have Anderson at $9 million let alone $3M. We'll even throw in 14th overall.

So Berggren = 3rd rounder
Fabbri cap dump = Late round pick (4th maybe) - he's fine and his contract isn't a burden but it's still a cap clearing move for Detroit.
Copp cap dump = 1st rounder - dude is making almost $6 mill to put up barely over 30 points for the next 3 years. Big offload.
Sharks will not be adding the more valuable pick here lol.

I actually think you could ask for the Sharks 33OA if you wanted to offer us 10OA. Sharks have the assets and wouldn't have the leverage between the two teams.
Not like I'd prefer to trade a higher pick but just realistically speaking.

Trade is honestly pretty fair value-wise.
Maybe throw in Rodrigue since SJ is lacking in the goalie department? Especially after trading Blackwood.

Playoffs next year maybe
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AStovetop</b></div><div>Crazy how people think the Sharks are dying to add salary to their cap. As if they can't just overpay some ACTUALLY good players in free agency to make their team better.
They could throw 7.5 mil at Stephenson, 6 mil at Domi, and 5.5 at Demelo and STILL be about 6 mil under the cap (and that's with Couture's 8 mil accounted for, who likely won't even play)</div></div>
Yeah but that wouldn't be as convenient as the Sharks paying their 1st overall or 14th overall for cap dumps from other teams :'(
